Colorado will wait a bit but if the injury turns out to be real serious to Varlamov, there might be a unique opportunity to trade Ramo for maybe even a high draft pick (they gave us a second for Berra, why not a first for Ramo). The Avs cant afford to throw away this season.

This again?

One way / two way contracts has nothing to do with waiver eligibility.

Why not? They just had a good one and have a promising future. I don't see their fans going anywhere right now.

I'm also firmly in the camp that we should not break up a good thing the moment we've found it. Obviously if a desperate team offers crazy loot you have listen.

I also don't see any logic as to why Rämö should be the one traded out of the two.

We are in rebuild, and seem to have two equal goalies. To me it seems obvious that we should rather be keeping a 28-year old goalie rather than a 32-year old goalie.

The goaltender market has been soft for some time. Ramo is only going to get you a 3rd round pick or 2nd round pick at best from a desperate team. Why compromise the competitiveness of the team for a 2nd round pick? Hiller has been fantastic but if he gets hurt it's nice to know that Ramo can fill in without the position dropping off.

It feels good to say that it doesn't matter who is in anymore, both Ramo and Hiller have given us a chance to win ever single game this year thus far.

While that's true Ortio does lose his waiver exempt status next year IIRC.

Would it be better to extend Ramo if he keeps up his play and trade Ortio for say an excellent defense prospect.

Ortio's not doing himself any favours this year so far.

This does bring up a good point. With Gillies & McDonald in our system there is potential for a stud goalie to develop but they are still some years away. The only consideration is that Ortio is not proven like Ramo or Hiller and would not get as good of a return. Ramo is 4 years younger than Hiller & if he continues to show a comparable upside to Hiller I'd rather keep him. I think Hiller would get the most return, his contract is very trade-able with him signed until the end of next year @ $4.5 Mill AAV. Ramo is a UFA at the end of this year and would be considered a rental & would not get as good of a return unless resigned.

I like this idea, if Ramo proves to be a legit goalie and I think he will, the Flames can afford to trade Ortio because they have Gillies most likely turning pro next season. The Flames desperately need better defense prospects in the system so it makes sense to me.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with his one way contract

Ramo is on the cusp of proving he's a legit #1 (at the very least, a solid #1a).

On the other hand, we're hoping Ortio will eventually reach that status with another solid year in the AHL, followed by some NHL action. Why take that guy instead of the guy that's already there?

I think the only reason we trade Ramo is if we get a 1st; steep price tag for sure but otherwise I think you happily re-sign him.

Besides, I'd rather Colorado crash and burn for a little while; just enough to put them 7th or 8th in the conference when all is said and done.

Hard to choose. They've both played great. Biggest upgrade on teh team so far and a great problem to have.

Masks a lot of deficiencies and gives you a chance to win every game.

Ortio will have to play better than he has to get anyone good back in return.

I know it's early but a 4.27 GAA and .872 save % are pretty oileresque. Maybe they'll take him for Darnell Nurse.

In regards to Ortio, after this season he will have used up his 4 years of not having to go through waivers. Meaning to be sent down, he will need to go through waivers.

Lots of players on two way contracts need to go through waivers but 99% of players on one way contracts need to go through waivers, so in such cases there is a correlation.
