But TJ Brodie is just a minor league player trying to make a name for himself

The important question is, how many T.J. Brodie's does Edmonton already have?

The best part of that is Parise bitching about it as if Brodie is supposed to just let Zach score?

Quite honestly, I'm shocked to the AAV. The term isn't unexpected, but the AAV is amazing. Awesome contract.

Quick question, is Brodie the best draft pick from the Sutter regime (Phaneuf in second and Backlund third)? Maybe I'm crazy for saying he's already better than Dion, but considering how well he's done the last year and the superior competition he faces in the west, I think he's a better dman.

peak Dion or current Dion? He's better than current Dion imo, but not peak.

Yeah that's probably the right way to put it, although Dion had more protection behind a better defensive core (Regehr, Warrener, Leopold, Ference, Hamrlik); meanwhile Brodie has only played one full season and is already a top pairing dman and faces the stiffest competition with Gio most nights.

Good deal for Brodie even if he doesn't continue improving

Better than Phaneuf both now (obviously) and at peak. When Phaneuf was a scoring machine he was getting lots of sheltered minutes on the defensive end. Hamrlik covered for Dion's defensive shortcomings and Dion got a lot of PP time. Small sample size but Brodie's on pace to best Dion's best offensive season and he plays the toughest assignments as well. His offensive game is on par with Dion's best offensive season and his defensive game is miles and miles ahead of Dion. The only thing Dion is better at is the big hit, which often leaves him out of position. I'll take Brodie's cerebral/positional game ahead of a big hit, any day of the week. Not to mention 4.65 million vs. 7.0 million.

Look at that average mins played too. That and the +/-...

I know it's a small sample size but TJ is just playing with so much confidence right now and at both ends of the ice. That play Sportsnet pointed out where he used a quick jab of his stick to knock that Jet streaking to the net off stride while he took his man was outstandingly savvy. He's just so smart in his own end and makes such great decisions.

He and Gio sure compliment each other well. Great to see we're looking to lock Brodie down, he's only going to get better.

Default Update: Friedman: Brodie extension to be finalized Monday. (5 yrs $4.65mil AAV)

More shifts per game than any other defenceman. Nice.

I was a bit surprised last night (well, no I wasn't) that when they posted the graphic of Monahan, Gaudreau and Bennett as the core pieces of the rebuild, that they ignored Brodie.

Wake up hockey world, the kid can play.

I'll be ecstatic if this deal gets done. I feel Brodie has been/is one of the key pieces of the rebuild and he's just getting better every year. It seems he's still underrated outside of the Flames organization but I think this season he really puts himself on the radar.

It'll be great to watch the Giordano/Brodie pairing for years to come.

Friedman on 960 says the $ for 1st year is relatively low and the last 4 years is all the same.

He also says deal is done and just waiting for signatures which is expected today

The Toronto media and Sportcast talking heads are going to have a really hard time talking about Brodie. First of all he's not an Eastern Conference defenseman, and second, he plays for the Flames. It's going to take Brodie at least a half season of this for them to even pick up on the fact that he's breaking out.

Sorry, just venting on a Monday morning about Eastern Canadian media (again!)
