Good value for sure.
As a side note...interesting how this all works...through last year and training camp this year, you don't hear much....suddenly after a few games this year you get a couple articles or snipits praising him and making somewhat bold statements as to his potential, and soon after comes a deal.
A combo of a good agent pumping him up to various sources like Friedman, McKenzie, along with the Flames playing along with the timing in building up some anticipation and positive PR in there too as the contract negotiations, likely from a few weeks ago or longer now, got closer to completion.

Burke has commented in the past the he doesn't like deals longer than five years, iirc. I would not expect max term or close to it.

No, I simply won't believe it!

Brodie is probably the most exciting young piece of the rebuild we've assembled thus far. I mean this in the sense that he's reached the league, and crushed it. We have exciting prospects, some with more "potential" than Brodie, but this young kid has -proven- he's a player. I hope he makes bank, because I'd rather Brodie at 5m a season than no Brodie at all. In fact, he's crushing it on my fantasy team which I've aptly named "Come at me Brodie"

you'd have to think that this will expedite a gio extension as well, the tandem has been so steady and both players likely view the partnership as mutually beneficial.

$4.5M is not a steal, it is pretty much where he should slot in given age and stat matched comparables.
He was never going to be in the $6M range like some of the ridiculous suggestions out there

By the end of the deal Brodie will be worth much more than $4.5m, of that I'm quite confident.

Fair price, fair term, and by the time he needs to be re-upped it should be an incredible value contract that would be easy to trade at the deadline if it ever comes to that (and I hope it doesn't).

Only because, so far as I know, agents aren't allowed to mention words like 'Corsi' or 'Fenwick' in contract negotiations. I'll bet you a ham sandwich that gets changed in the next CBA.

Of course they're allowed. They can't use those as comparables in arbitration.

He does just keep getting better, doesn't he?
$4.5 million is going to be peanuts for a player like Brodie in a couple of years.

Right on the mark. Would have liked 1 more year as his contract will be up in the middle of our run. So even if you had to give up more up say 5 mil per (effectively 7 mil for year 6) to get the sixth year I would have done it.
But great job Burke.

I was speaking to him as a Flames player and prospect though. During his entire time as a Flame prospect and players he's flown under the radar. 4th round pick, surprise out of camp, unassuming defensivemen. Doesn't have that booming shot that gets noticed or those big hits etc. Just quietly developed slowly but surely.
|
I kind of disagree with this. Darryl was hyping him from at least his second training camp and he made the opening day roster in his rookie year before being sent down to Abbotsford to be taught how to play defence by Playfair but his offence and skating has always been known to be top flight. I look at him as fulfilling his early promise.
He also looked really good in the latter part of 12/13 when he started to take top pairing responsibilities on defence after Bouwmeester left, so for me he's never been under the radar. One thing is though there are many players with huge promise but few that reach that level like Brodie has.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC 9s9 seconds ago Hearing Brodie AAV will be $4.65M when deal is done, likely tomorrow. Five-year contract.
