Conspiracy Theory: Who gets McDavid
Disclaimer: This is not intended to be a serious thread
So assuming that the league is somehow involved in making sure generational talents go to the "right" markets (Crosby to Pittsburgh, Kane to Chicago, etc), what's your predictions for where Connor McDavid ends up? Looking at the standings there are several teams struggling early on that shouldn't be (Flyers, Rangers, Avalanche), so if there is some kind of intentional tanking going on for McDavid then my prediction would be one of Philly or New York getting him. The Flyers are one of the largest hockey markets in the US, are in a long cup drought, and haven't had a legit superstar since Lindros (which was short lived). Meanwhile the Rangers are fresh off an appearance in the finals, but the odds of them repeating that and beating whomever comes out of the west are slim to none. Add in Lundqvist entering the downward slop of his career and their competitive window is closing, getting McDavid would definitely boost their chances at getting a cup before that happens which would be a huge boost for the league
Of course if there is no conspiracy then he likely ends up with one of Buffalo or Edmonton, but in the latter case I'd actually hope the league puts in a fix

Toronto.
A Toronto Stanley Cup would probably double league revenues.
ACC seats would have 6-figure price tags for the next 3 years, and every clothing manufacturer in Canada would have to tool up to meet the demand for white and blue McDavid jerseys.

Arizona. In a last ditch effort to save the franchise and his reputation, Bettman gives his pet team the next generational talent.

I don't think the league would put it's next big superstar in such a small market. Ditto for Arizona, but the Coyotes seem to be Bettman's personal pet so maybe he has the final call

Has Toronto ever received a lottery pick (that they didn't trade)? Until the draft rules change next season and all non-playoff teams have a shot at #1, the league could only help teams that help themselves.

I think Carolina or Florida will end up with McDavid.
I don't buy the whole conspiracy theory though. Why would the NHL want to reward edmonton with 3 1st overall picks in a row? I think if it were rigged at all the NHL would want to spread those 1st overall picks to other teams.... Not that pathetic franchise up North.

Buffalo or Florida helps to strengthen the 'weakest' teams in a division that is very strong in terms of value and stability. Mtl, Ott, Tor, Det, Bos, Tampa are all not going anywhere and are very stable.
On the other hand, Philadelphia helps to develop a potentially lucrative 3-way 'rivalry' with Pitt and Wash.
So, I would say, Buffalo, Philadelphia, or Florida, in that order of possibility.
I would say that Florida is the most unlikely possibility as they might already be viewed as a 'lost-cause', already earmarked for relocation.

Well Edmonton had the luck of getting all three of their picks in relatively weak draft years, and I would think they'd only interfere if there was a golden opportunity to strengthen a big market (Crosby to Pittsburgh in a hidden lottery, Kane to Chicago with terrible odds). If no big name markets are in the lottery this year I don't think they do anything, but wouldn't be surprised whatsoever to see the odds turn strange if one is

Teams tank hard all season. The lottery is held, with the last place overall team winning the lottery, assuring them of the prize they covet. After the playoffs, the NHL announces they are expanding into Las Vegas and Seattle. Las Vegas is awarded first overall by virtue of winning a coin toss. Seattle settles for second overall. Protected lists for the expansion draft are due by June 25. The entry draft is held June 26-27, the expansion draft is held June 30, and free agency opens July 1.

Oilers are oiling it yet again. They're an inept circus sideshow in a meat grinder division/conference. On pace for 17 points with a delusional coach they can't fire yet because it would look bad. They're the 12/13 Av's without any sort of offence, and when they find it, all eyes are on the hand grenade that is the puck in their own end and they just hate their own end kind of malarkey! That sucks! Gimme the puck and watch me score!!
And their goalies are aweful. Brz will probably try out there. The Riders got Joseph, so why not another has been??

It depends. If they want to give it to a team that's trying to build a team right, then we're the best candidate of the mediocre bunch at the bottom.

All I know is that it probably won't be Calgary. In real life, the "good guy" rarely wins in the end. The winner is usually the guy that cheats.

Ego. Maybe another number 1 pick can make them not be no good?
No draft picks are bigger than such no goodness

It would be the Coyotes. Bettman is hell bent that team stays there, they can't draw a crowd but they would if they had a generational talent. For the record though I think it is bunk.

Coyotes get him.
Bettman gets to keep his toy in the sandbox (hah) forever, hockey booms in the south again and Las Vegas, Kansas City, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque (Go Topes!), Houston, San Diego, New Orleans get expansion teams over the next 25 years. By 2045 Mexico becomes the third country to have an NHL team.
McDavid continues Gretzky's legacy of bringing hockey to the south
