This is the type of fight they shouldn't be trying to get out of the game. Goon fights off a faceoff? Fine, get rid of them. Heat of the moment fight between two guys who can play the game? Let it happen.

Exactly. Phaneuf put a borderline hit on Iggy, and Iggy was standing up for himself.
As someone else said, Phaneuf should be thankful they broke it up because I think Iggy would've tuned him.
I also agree that Iggy would have tuned Phaneuf pretty good. I've been waiting a long time to see that so it sucks the refs broke it up.
Anyone else recall a joint interview with Iginla and Phaneuf wherein they asked who would win in a fight between them and, without hesitation, Phaneuf said he would. It may have been towards the end of Phaneuf's tenure as a Flame or just after. I may also be imagining the whole thing. Anyway, I thought Phaneuf came off like a clown in failing to be respectful, if not diplomatic and since then I've been wanting to see a proper tilt between those two.

God f'ing dammit. Why the hell would the refs break that up? I'm not a fan of fights after clean hits (which that clearly was) but when do you ever see a ref break those up? And now the fight the entire league has been waiting to see, they decide to step in?? $#@$@#
Would have loved to have seen Iggy beat the snot out of Doin then earn a Gordie Howe hat trick.

I worded wrong. I was mentioning what I felt was the reason Iggy went at Phaneuf. At 0:49 in the clip, you have Iggy in the middle of 3 Leafs players and Phaneuf coming from Iggy's right side. Phaneuf hit air when Iggy stood straight up meaning the point of contact would be close to his head (or we can argue shoulder and I'll concede I was wrong).
Perhaps Iggy was pissed off it was too close to his head for comfort?
This article even mentions it was an "elevated but acceptable open ice shoulder check". Just saying it might have been too close for comfort and Iggy took exception to that?
Could be pure heat of the moment stuff too. No way to know unless Iggy gives an explanation.

And this folks is how the NHL is removing fighting from the NHL. They have been told by the NHL head office eliminate any fight if possible.
The NHL is not going face a fan and media backlash for banning a popular part of the game. They are just going to not allow it more frequently.
