I think this is going to be pretty close. Going into this season there were questions of whether Brodie (and Gio) would be able to repeat what they did last season. It's still very early, but so far they're looking even better this season. Brodie in particular seems to have re-discovered the offensive abilities that made him such an intriguing prospect in the first place. It seems like he's in on the rush practically every play now, and with how well he skates he's always back to cover on defense.
If he keeps this up I would have no problem with management giving him 7yrs @ $6M

well I just picked up Brodie in my pool so the odds are he's either going to get injured or just play like crap for the rest of the year. If he keeps playing the way he has been playing then both him and I will win at the end of the season!

5 players in their mid-20s who could emerge as NHL stars
TJ Brodie
TJ Brodie might be the best defenseman in the NHL among those who draw the reaction "Sorry, who?" from your average hockey fan.
Without getting too into the advanced stats, the numbers are there to show that it isn’t just playing with Mark Giordano that’s made him look good. In fact, you could make the case that Giordano becoming a Norris Trophy candidate at 30 might have something more to do with his partner.

If I were in Treliving's shoes (thank goodness for all of you I'm not!), I would make a rare exception here and offer Brodie near-unlimited term in exchange for a lowered cap hit. That's how much I like Brodie, and how confident I am in him remaining a good/great defenseman for years to come. Example:
$79.3 million total ÷ 13 years = $6.1 million AAV / cap hit
On a slightly more reasonable term, I could certainly see a 7x7 deal happening (since 7 is his number).
On a short-term contract (under 5 years), I would expect Brodie's AAV to be ≥ $ 7 million. Therefore, the following would not surprise me:
$15 million total ÷ 2 years = $7.5 million AAV / cap hit.

You know we can only sign him for up to 8 years under the CBA, right?

The whole purpose of RFA status is to keep costs down. Short term deal he gets 4M, but if we're buying any UFA years I think he'll get around 6M AAV

The maximum deal (in years) the Flames could give Brodie is 8.

8 years, whatever he wants. The kid is 24, and already one of the best defensemen in the NHL. He'd be a top-pairing D on almost every team in the league and there is nothing in his play to suggest he's going to get anything but better.
If we could get him for less than 6 it'd be one of the best contracts in the league, but if we paid him 7 million a year for 8 years, I'd be fine with that deal. Fine.

6x6 is what I'd want. Would take him until he is 31.

6M x 8 years would be a good deal for both sides IMO.

According to Friedman during HNIC 2nd intermission tonight, Flames and Brodie's agent are working on a deal right now. (No more details than that)

Give him 8 years, and hopefully at a decent rate. He'll be their best d-man for years, might as well lock him up for as long as you can.

I agree. As much as I hate giving young players big salary but I think TJ Brodie been proving he could be one of the best defenseman in the NHL. He is improving every season.

Before this gets locked... it is kind of fun reading how much higher the fans would of paid him, for what looked like about the same amount of years on average. I don't know enough, but seems like the Flames did well.
Good job Mr Lube GM....
