LOL. That would be incredible. I guess they would have to find him first. And it seems like maybe he doesn't need the gig as he apparently declined the royalties Light In The Attic was holding for him in escrow. Must be independently wealthy or something.

And what is going on in this thread? Yes GC is a modern country singer but he's a good guy and a family man and his music has little to do with so called bro-country. I think he'll be a great ambassador for the Flames and they are lucky to get an established artist like this.

It looks like they found him but I think he wouldn't be interested as you say.

The pair also shared the reissues with Wulff, who did share with them some stories from that time. And while he was impressed with what the label had done, he wasn’t interested in either the cheque they had for him or being involved in promoting the records.

He had, he told them, moved on, and was only really interested in making music for himself and at home.

Interesting story.

Man, George Lays is a pretty decent country singer name, someone messed up telling him to change it to George Canyon.

Well if the Chinese National Team comes to town to play against the Flames, we will be ready!

I really can't believe this is such a big deal. Does anyone even actually listen to the anthem if they're not at the game? I will change the channel until the game starts. That's when they even televise the anthem.

Great choice. His voice is just fine, not twangy at all.

Plus, he is local, very community oriented. He might have been born in NS but he currently lives in High River. He has a farm or ranch there.

He was very involved in helping High River citizens after the flood last year. He teamed up with Trail Appliances and made sure most people got a new fridge.

Gordon Lightfoot would have been nice. The Star Spangled Banner can be sung to the tune of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

People sure like to complain. If they hired some random this would be a 1 page thread. They hire a guy who's a known, solid artist and then we all have to hate him

for the record, I am fine with this choice at this point, I'm just scared when it's "country singer" because they always add that super fake drawl/twang when they sing and it just sounds so dumb. If he sings it straight, there's no problems. In the end, it's just the anthem singer and I can press mute for 2 minutes.

But yeah, country singers can be annoying.

That's pretty impressive. I bet that effort was really appreciated.

There are allot of talented vocalists out there. Seems like a fairly lame publicity attempt on the Flames part, hiring someone that is 'Alberta-famous'. He suits western-night but not my preference for everynight.

This city will never shake this stupid, backwater hick stereotype, as long as it keeps getting stuffed down this countries throat. I hope he drives out in a Ford F350 dually pulling a horse trailer every night. Then ropes a calf after he finished the anthem. And hopefully there are lots of Yahoo's and Yeehaws from all the seasonal, Volvo V60 wagon driving July cowboys wearing True Religion jeans with Jack Daniels cowboy hats that live in Tuscany.

I think that about covers it.
actually, if you haven't noticed, Calgary has carved out a pretty awesome identity for itself, and it's own culture. it rocks and people know about the city internationally.

The only ones calling it a backwater hick stereotype are the ones who want it to become the "____ of the West" or "Canada's ____", where we are an imitation version of Houston, or Toronto, or something else.

Calgary is Calgary. It's a city where big ranching met oil and gas, and made fortunes for a lot of people as resources were developed. It perservered over incompetent efforts by the Federal government to get in the way. Now it has a booming population, booming average income, a muslim mayor, and the best 10 day party you'll see in July.

Don't change. If you want it to, then move. There is no shortage of people wanting in.

Although I hate the "move if you don't like it" posts and I hate the country stereotype that some in Calgary love to indulge in, I agree with carlson's sentiment. Calgary has a different history than many other big cities. It is the intersection of ranching and O&G and because of that it is unique (Houston not withstanding). Like it or not, the culture is here to stay for a while longer. I've learned to embrace it a little bit more than I used to.

He is a talented vocalist. Just because he's not you're your preference doesn't make him less talented.

I can't believe the reaction by some before they even see him sing a note of the anthem. It's like petulant little kids that won't even try a bite of something they've never had because they know they won't like it. You would think he's coming out on a horse with a banjo and spittin' chewing tobacco in between verses.
