Ahh music elitism, how I have always treasured thee.
Any decision the Flames seem to make is pretty much always the wrong decision, or at least it is in the eyes of the CP hivemind. Y'all are way too critical of way too much. How's about you give ol' George a chance. Of course that seems to be asking too much.

And his real name is Frederick George Lays, but Canyon sounds way more country'esque. Just like the fake country twang.
This city will never shake this stupid, backwater hick stereotype, as long as it keeps getting stuffed down this countries throat. I hope he drives out in a Ford F350 dually pulling a horse trailer every night. Then ropes a calf after he finished the anthem. And hopefully there are lots of Yahoo's and Yeehaws from all the seasonal, Volvo V60 wagon driving July cowboys wearing True Religion jeans with Jack Daniels cowboy hats that live in Tuscany.
I think that about covers it.

Why do people care if he's a country singer? (Genuine curiosity).
My own reluctance to care is because it's not like he's singing his own music, he's singing the anthem. A couple minutes before a game. Even if it's got a slight twang to it amounts to a sliver on the pie graph of country music Calgarians are subjected to... and it still wouldn't even be country music.

That he's not even from Alberta is hilarious and makes his choice pretty much all about his style of music. Would some rocker from Nova Scotia get to do the anthem? Highly, highly unlikely. Country isn't everyone's favourite kind of music out here but let's stereotype it anyways.

The anthem's aren't country music, but they can be sung that way I suppose.
I think its pretty good they got a "name" to sing the anthem. I hope he sings it with his normal voice not with a country twang.
I dislike country music, other than Johnny Cash, who is one of my top 5 favorite artists of all time. But to me Johnny isn't really country as I understand it.
Give it a chance, he has a pretty nice sounding voice, and could pull this off well.

This is getting freakin ridiculous. The captain of the bloody team isn't from Alberta either. He has a ranch southwest of Okotoks, and has lived there for awhile. He is one of the nicest funniest guys you will meet and a class act. He has a good voice for the anthem, and will do it justice. The last time he sang it he left the hat at home, wore the jersey and sang the anthem as it should be sang.
Oh but wait! Hes a Canadian country singer, chosen to sing the anthem for a proffessional team in Calgary? Let's lose our minds!

Like Twitty, Cash started out as a rock n roll musician. He just never went smarmy like Twitty.

I would say far from music elitism.
What you must understand, and speaking for myself and no one else... that I do care and specifically listen to the anthems, I tune into other games and move after the anthems. I'm sure if the flames changed their jerseys and went into a direction you disliked you would also get your panties in a bunch.... The hive mind comment is just garbage because it just isn't true... of course there will always be a voice that speaks up negativity about any direction because CP is a very huge community that has a very diverse range of interest. Added to the fact that we are all passionate about the Flames it is only understandable that whatever direction the Flames take that someone would wish it to be the other. It's not a hive mind.
There's nothing wrong with me hoping that the Flames anthem singer is one of the singers I make sure I tune into to listen too. It's not something that a lot of fans care about and I'm perfectly ok with that... but just because others don't care it shouldn't mean that it isn't an interest for me
