To quote the great Bob Newhart, "I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'."

I actually like some country artists, especially legends like Johnny Cash. The Ring Of Fire cover was like pissing on his grave. That fake twang made my skin crawl.

I don't consider "country" singing at all.

Isn't there any video anywhere of him doing the anthem previously? I know I've seen him do it (I think usually at country night), but I can't recall what he sounds like.

Personally, I love a lot of country music. If it's singers like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Kris Kristofferson...sign me up. Great voices and even better storytelling.

These new cow-bros on the other hand, who only ever seem to sing about partying and drinking, are the country equivalent of Nickleback. Songs about red solo cups...what amazing storytelling!

And as mentioned, what's with the fake country twang? If someone from the American-South has an accent...that I can at least understand. But in what part of Alberta or Canada do you ever hear anyone talk like that in real life? Just a bunch of fakers.

I hope he doesn't spit chaw on the ice, or ride a horse out, or do the boot scoot boogie whilst performing the anthem. That would take away from the majesty of it all.

Don't we already do that enough with the Stampede? When do we start embracing what we are now rather than the past?

I am shocked at how many people are against country music, especially here in Calgary.

Country music is the best. It beats any of that screamo, auto-tune, electronic and fake top 40 crap.

It's just cool the Flames hired an actual recording artist to sing every home anthem, don't think any other teams have that.
The ironic part of this post is the "crap" you mention is all much less mainstream and top 40 than country. In fact that's the #1 problem with modern country music, it's pop music with some steel guitar and banjo and yes, that annoying ass twang they all gotta do now, just thrown into a pop song. (as if those things make it country)

Personally, I would love to see a dishevelled guy in a suit walk out, mutter the anthem and then shuffle back to his BMW.

What happens if Canyon sings the anthem with the twang skating around, dressed as Scorchy?

That would be the only way it would be acceptable.

Going from one of the top anthem singers to one of, if not the worst. Not at all a fan.

Country music is perfectly listenable, especially when you're really tired but can't get to sleep. Works almost as good as Ambien (without making you do crazy #### like Ambien)

Speaking of storytelling, this guy wasn't bad either and he didn't need any fake nasal twang like in the present day formula country crap.

and what's with youtube where you can't turn off autoplay.

Count me as being surprised, i figured Flames fans weren't so finicky. What's next a debate that Pepsi is better than Coke? I never trust a Pepsi drinker...

So the games are played in the Heart of the New West, in a building shaped as Saddle on the Stampede grounds. Seems like a logical choice to me. I like it!

As a native Calgarian I am proud of our heritage and hope we continue to embrace it moving forward. Regarding country music... What's not to like? Songs are about mud, beer, and women. Good good good.

Anything other than one of those lame child anthem singers and I am happy. Really, what's the big deal anyways? I've seen George Canyon sing it at the dome and it is very good. I am really surprised that the Flames were able to get a professional singer of that calibre.

Country > Opera 100 days a week.

I was force fed Rap music for a number of years in my former work place. That in part is why I hate it. The constant foul langauge and references to violence were a total turn off.
