He will get paid like a superstar defenseman. Keep in mind that the cap will be rising. He'll probably get between $7m and $8m AAV.

I doubt he takes a term of only four years. I bet he's looking for a "final" contract, 6 or 7 years. That will pretty much cover him the rest of his playing career. And someone will pay handsomely for it, probably in the 7M range, even with that term.

I'd say he'll be overpriced, but I think the Flames will lock him down without too much issue.

So a 5 yr would take him to 38?

I'd be okay with:
8.0
8.0
7.0
5.0
4.0
=32.0/5yr = 6.4m AAV

If he keeps up his play this year Gio has the flames by the balls. Renew him in the summer for up to 4 years@ $8m,or 6 years @ $7m. If he wont sign, gotta trade him.

Man, we're so blessed to have him and Brodie. Without a doubt one of the top 5 pairings in the league right now, if not the best currently. They're carrying the team offensively and defensively. What team can say that about their top pairing?

Gio at 33 isn't going to get some 6 year contract. 3-4 sounds right to me. Doubt they'd sign him beyond 36-37, as his play would be very questionable by that time with age playing a factor. Probably at least 6 mil. Knowing Gio though he's probably not going to gouge the team to keep him.

Didn't Gio grow up a Leafs fan? If so, I'd imagine that would somehow play a role into whether or not he'd like to test the free agency market.

Have to be a pretty good offer to have him retire a Flame IMO.

how many stars from toronto have used the UFA market to play wiht their childhood fav leafs?!? Had this been the case, the leafs wouldn't suck as bad as they have, for so long.

Every year there are some (I think he will be one). My guess is it would take a contract higher than 6-6.5 per to keep him here until retirement.

I would be hesitant about giving him a combination of big money/long term.

Give him some big money on a 2 or 3 year deal and see how things progress from there.

No cap crunch in the next 2 years so no reason not to pay him up front and let him earn his next contract.

What I would LOVE to see (won't happen) is 2 years at something like $8 or $8.5m. Pay him now, while they are scraping the floor. Then, after that, 4 or 5 years at something like $5.5m.

I think will happen is something like 7 years, $40m or just under $6m per:

8, 8, 6, 6, 5, 4, 3

I don't doubt Gio's commitment to the Flames one bit. But if I'm not mistaken, Gio's from the Toronto area and lives there in the off-season, so I'm not sure that the "retire in Calgary" carrot is all that enticing.

I would offer him a 5 year, with the first 3 years NTC / NMC. That gives the team flexibility at the end, and perhaps even allows Gio to twilight in Toronto. Would love for him to remain tied to the organization, but I don't think that's in the cards.

5 or more years, 6-7 Average.

Less than 5 years, 7-8 Average.

4 years $30 million would be what I would want to give him. Nothing more than 4 years.

He will be 33 years old when he becomes a UFA. The Flames need to tread very carefully and not give him a ridiculous long contract. I would like to see 5 years at $7 million and even then I wouldn't be very comfortable with it.

If he ends up being a top 10 finalist for the norris again this year I'd offer him 3 years at 6.8 per.

I'd offer whatever he's asking. You don't lose a player like Giordano at this stage of a rebuild. He's too important on and off the ice.

The guy is a top-level player (at his position), and should be paid as such. We've been getting this guy on the pretty cheap for a while now. I think it's time he gets paid.

Too early to speculate, a lot can change in the course of the year... While we might agree on his value as perceived in todays world, his contract and term will likely depend on his play, the cap and direction of the team after this year. I love Gio, but I too would be wary of giving too much for too long. Worst thing would be to hand-cuff ourselves in 3-4 years and needing to sign some of our young guys.

I was thinking something like that too, I would rather see something like 3 years / $9M AAV.
