8 years, 40M for Brodie and I'd be stoked.

Not really commenting on Brodie, but Oliver Ekman-Larsson signed a 33M contract as a 21 year old with 60 points total in the NHL that would include 4 RFA years. In what would be his "UFA" years he's making 6.5M and 7M as a 26 and 27 year old. While having a great breakout year, he only had about 1 and a half years of solid NHL play when he earned that 33M.
Brodie will be closer to free agency, his contract will encompass more of his prime years, and he will have proven himself longer than Ekman-Larsson had. He might not be anywhere close to as good as Ekman-Larsson, but he might be able to see somewhat close to that type of money with another solid year under his belt.

I always amazed at the complete lack of critical thinking that goes into many fans' contract value comparisons to different players.
OEL is only making X so therefore Brodie should make X-Y is ridiculous. What was the market, the age, the size of the cap, the leverage for the player and how do they compare to this new player?
If Brodie clearly emerges as a top two minute defenceman with the quality of competition and possession stats as he had last year then he's getting paid in the range of 6 million. It depends on term and how many UFA years he gives up.

that's a great contract for the Wild ... pretty similar to the deal that Travis Hamonic signed with the Isles last year (7 yrs at 3.9 I think). If Brodin continues his development as expected, that deal is going to be a steal in a couple of years. Especially if the cap continues to rise.
As for Brodie, he's going to be paid. And he deserves that ... having a young defenseman coming thtough the ranks and earning huge money after a bridge contract is a very, very, very good "problem" to have. I hope they'll sign him to 5 years minimum.

Locking up Brodie for a longtime will be ideal. He has the best slapshot on the team, he's defensively reliable, can quarterback a breakout and can play the body. He's more talented than some 7 million dollar captains, sign the guy and be elated we have one of the most well rounded dmen in the league.

Agree on everything except the slapshot. He is a defensive stud

I agree Brodie is nowhere close to the type of dman the OEL is. Brodin is a much better comparable

I don't care who the player is... 8 year term is just gross.
I'd personally like to see him signed for 4-6 years. You just never know what can happen to a player over that period of time.

I don't have a problem paying Brodie after the season.
I think it actually sets a good example for every other young player in the system. We'll pay you once you earn it. Otherwise, every prospect would want to skip the bridge contract.
if he earns it, pay it, no problem by me - but the key is that he earned it, and not a hope on what might come to pass.

As a Wild fan, very happy with this AAV. Good, young player. Tracking toward being a consistent and plus-player in the top four. Needs to get over a bit of a sophomore slump from last season. But, playing with Suter helps....a lot.
Wild going with a 3rd pair of Folin (23) and Dumba (20) to start the season. Add Brodin (21), and Spurgeon (24) and Scandella (24), and you have a very young D-corps in Minny. Including Suter, average age of Wild top six defense is 23.5.

Let's use the terrible deals as comparables. That makes sense.

Brodie is gonna get paid well. We should add a few more years for Gio too now while we can!
8 year contract, 6 year contract. History has shown contract like this suck. 3 or 4 year deal for the player and the team is excellent for both. Being an RFA does hinder the extension, the flames may cheap out, I hope not, and have a ROR situation on their hands. Brodie at 5 or 5.5 and Gio at 6.5 and I would be more than happy. Gio could demand more, we should pay him for that too.
We have the cap room and to keep players on our team we will need to over pay a bit. If we don't overpay for brodie he will leave the team as he becomes a ufa.

Agreed. I know there was a lot of talk about Colorado this year, but I could easily see Minnisota having the potential to be a powerhouse team with Chicago, LA and Anahaim. Solid young defense, good mix of forwards with experience (Parise, Pominville, Koivu, Vanek) with some young guys (Granlund, Nino).
Of coarse, IMO, you aren't a contender until a contender as its a huge job from hunter to being hunted..... but solid built team for sure.

Reasonable mentions but I give it to Brodie and think he has room to improve yet. What sets him apart is his setup on the shot is so solid and he's got his head up so much that it looks more natural than Gio or Wideman and less likely to result in being out of position.

Brodie probably has a good shot. But he doesn't use it nearly enough.
