At 19, Jonas Brodin burst onto the scene with the Minnesota Wild during the 2012-13 as the youngest defensemen in the National Hockey League and was named to the All-Rookie Team. Now, the blueliner will be in a Minnesota sweater through the 2020-21 season, as the Wild has signed him to a six-year contract extension.

“We are very excited to get Jonas Brodin signed through the 2020-21 season,” said Fletcher. “He is one of the premier young defensemen in the NHL and has played a huge role on our team since entering the league as a 19-year-old. We’re confident that his game will continue to evolve in all areas and he will be a valuable part of our core for years to come.”

Brodin is much younger so I'm guessing a Brodie deal would have to top this by at least 1-1.5 million AAV

Probably one of the very best defenders in that 21/22 age range. Good pay day for brodin and a pretty friendly number for the team. Interested to see how much more this kid can progress.

Brodie is looking at easily 5m+ on a long term deal if he repeats his play from last season. Based on the first 3 games, it looks like he's just picking up where he left off. That 2-year bridge deal we gave him instead of a deal like this is going to cost the Flames a lot of money & cap space moving forward.

Yeah, I meant signing him to a long term extension this past offseason. His next contract will continue to get more expensive if he continues to progress like he has the last 2 years.

I know it's becoming more popular to criticize the flames for not locking Brodie up to a long term contract 2 years ago since it seems more and more likely he'll need a $5+ million per year long term contract after this year... But most of us agreed we would be very happy if he progresses to the point where he would cost that much. Who knows if he would have if he was just given a 6 year $3 million contract to begin with. I'm not saying he wouldn't have continued to progress like he has but you never know.

only 11 D-men in the league have a cap hit of $6M or more; Brodie's next deal won't be close to that number; I think low to mid-4's if he improve his offensive numbers to the 40+ pt range

Easily one of the worst moves (and that's saying something) of the Feaster Regime was not taking care of this kid on a longer term deal when they had interest/opportunity to do so. The cap hit may not seem like a big deal now, but over the course of a 6-7 year deal with the Flames on the uptick soon, 1-2M AAV is going to be huge.

All indications were that Brodie was an NHLer at absolute worst at the time the Flames refused to go long term with him. What makes that decision even more dumfounding is that a rebuilding club under Feaster clearly had no problem handing out an insanely idiotic contract to Wideman, an aging player with a very limited skill set the summer before.

The Wild got it right in this instance - you don't sit on a player who is clearly going to be in your plans.

Brodin is a great young D-man. I am glad the Wild locked him up for term.

I hope Brodie gets a 6/30 contract give or take a bit.

I don't know all of them but just guessing Green,Phaneuf and Letang are 3 of those.

Any GM,fan or enemy on planet hockey earth would take Brodie over them.

I think Trevling should have done it this past summer. You could have had him at 5 for 5 or perhaps even 4.5

I think he ends up at 5.5 per for 5 years signed some time just after Christmas. Anything less is great.

5.5 is Oliver Ekman-Larsson money, I don't think Brodie is in that echelon of player. 4.75-5 would be a very fair number for both sides imo.
