Default Team Nickname Origins

Didn't see a thread about this on here. Interesting article on how all NHL teams got their nicknames

http://mentalfloss.com/article/22915...nhl-team-names

21. CALGARY FLAMES

The Flames played in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980 and their nickname was a reference to the burning of Atlanta by General William T. Sherman during the Civil War. While the team moved, the nickname remained.

Where are the easily offended whiners in the Adirondack mascot thread on this one?

Its not really a 'nickname' per se. It's the team's name.

Usually nicknames are fairly organic and, honestly, pretty lame.

Such as; Sens, Bolts, Habs, Rags, Hallsy, Nuge, Ebs.....things like that.

And it was one of the top 5 things to ever happen for the franchise.

How did Rubber Puckies ever get to be a finalist for San Jose's team?

Given Ohio was a Union state and Georgia Confederate, does that make a Flames-Blue Jackets game a civil war re-enactment?

Originally, it was the team names that were lame: Ottawa Hockey Club, Club Athlétique Canadien, Arena Hockey Club of Toronto. The nicknames (Silver Seven, Canadiens, etc.) were made up by fans, or quite often, by sports reporters.

Nowadays, the 'nicknames' are the official names of the organizations, market-researched, tested, and trademarked up the wazoo. But they are still often referred to as nicknames, in a desperate attempt to recreate a sense of history.

4. Philadelphia Flyers

The team sponsored a name-the-team contest after Ed Snider, then-vice president of the Philadelphia Eagles, brought hockey back to the City of Brotherly Love in 1966. Snider's sister, Phyllis, reportedly suggested the name Flyers, which sounds good when paired with Philadelphia but doesn't have any real meaning.
I always took it that Philadelphia took the name from the old Edmonton Flyers, who played in the old pro WHL as well as other leagues. Bud Poile (David's dad) was a player and coach of the Edmonton team and he went on to be the the first GM of the Philadelphia Flyers.

remembering back the Flyers name probably came from Edmonton being a major training centre for pilots

Very irritating to read 'nickname' over and over again.
