I'm thinking Gaudreau is gonna get his 1st goal tonight.

We would need to keep a healthy portion of Wideman's salary in order to stay above the Floor in any trade scenario...seems unlikely unless salary is coming back...
In retrospect the Engelland overpayment is probably a good thing as we will need it to help tread water over the floor the next few seasons.

Can't wait to see Gaudreau against the worst defensive team in the NHL.

From Wes Gilbertson:
A telling quote from #Flames head coach Bob Hartley on his lineup decisions against Oilers. Among the scratches is D Dennis Wideman, the US$5.25-million man ...
"Always remember that it has to be 'Always earned, never given.' You want to be in the lineup every game for the 82 games, you'll have to show up for the 82 games. Free ice-time doesn't exist in Calgary."

It's crazy how much the rosters have changed.
Is Draisaitl centering their second line? If so, this should be fun.

Hall and Eberle for them.
Gio, Backlund, Glencross, and Brodie for the Flames (Stajan was with the Flames but didn't play that game).

Does that include Smid? or is it 7 players with 6 on the same team as last time?

Head coach Bob Hartley, on the other hand, believes it's beneficial for his team to take in the pre-game ceremony.
"We will be on the bench," head coach Bob Hartley stated emphatically. "I learned that those guys, the Gretzkys and Coffey and Messier and Lowe, all those guys, they’re a big part of the history of the Oilers but they’re also a big part of the history of hockey. Whether you retire one jersey during the regular season or you recognize a great hockey club like they were, us as an organization has to show respect for this so we’re going to be on the bench for the opening ceremonies.
|
Quote:
When he was the coach of the Atlanta Thrashers, he and his leadership group opted not to partake in a ceremony honouring Serge Savard in Montreal.
"They kicked our butt and we missed the ceremony," he lamented. "This summer, I met Serge Savard and I apologized to him because I think that on my part, it’s a big lack of respect and tonight it won’t happen.
"I addressed it with our players and whenever there’s going to be a retired jersey or a ceremony like tonight, you can count on the Flames to be a part of those ceremonies."

I like Colborne on Monahan's wing as some posters say but Colborne has been a face off champion in the last little while. Last night he went 11 out of 16 for a 69% total winning percentage. The whole team did well but using Colborne as a centre has some advantages.

Raymond - Stajan - Byron
-Speed, with solid veteran center presence, can probably create some odd man rushes. Byron can be bumped up if top lines struggle to produce
Bollig - Bouma - Jones
-Jones can also earn his way up the lineup if he performs well
Those would be my lines.

I'd switch around Glencross and Gaudreau. Having all three of the lesser experienced guys (Guardreau-Monahan-Hudler) together will make it easier to manage their icetime on the road plus I think the three of them would compliment each other really really well. Glencross-Backlund-Hudler becomes a strong line that we can deploy PvP, and Raymond-Stajan-Byron can be a speedy two-way checking line.

I hope there are lots of entertaining goals in the game tonight. Like the last time the flames played in the Oilers home opener, when Eberle scored his first NHL, and was highlight of the night (oiler I know).
I feel like with the defenses out there it could have the potential for lots of sick goals on both sides.

I hope there are no "sick" goals from there end...lucky for us Ian White doesn't play for the Flames anymore and won't lay down on the ice to play a one on one

Yeah, no thanks to any 'sick' oiler goals. The hype that Eberle goal generated was irritating as a Flames fan.

I was against the Colborne as a center experiment in pre-season but actually thought he looked good in that role in preseason.
Didn't look great last night but IMO the entire team struggled with the pace of a regular season game. I would give him a little bit longer.

I agree, no team is going to take that on unless they dump a contract back to the Flames. For the next couple of years the Flames are probably better off just keeping Wideman as a way to remain about the Cap Floor. Same goes for David Jones.
