They're honouring the fire that killed a fireman? Not the fireman himself? Yikes.
I think that's my biggest problem with this mascot. Yes, it looks kinda stupid and like a costume you get in the dollar store, but whatever. It's a mascot.
The origin story involves how he "overcame" a firefighter and shows a fallen firefighter. I don't see any humour in that at all. I'm sure many firefighters lost their lives in that great fire as well as the numerous firefighters who risk this on a daily basis to save lives. It's completely disrespectful and unnecessary to involve a fallen firefighter in any of it's marketing.
Would have found it alot funnier if they lit this on fire and just pointed and laughed while it burned:

Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Flames have released a statement regarding today’s mascot unveiling.
“Earlier today we unveiled our new mascot Scorch. In an attempt to provide background material for the character who will be the face of our team, particularly with young fans, we crafted a story that Scorch was the remaining ember from the tragic fire that destroyed much of Glens Falls in 1864.
We also crafted a skit that helped to launch the new mascot – with the help of the Glens Falls Fire Department. While it seemed in good taste when it was on the drawing board, it is evident now that it was in poor taste.
On behalf of our entire organization we want to apologize for our thoughtlessness today. We have obviously turned something good, the launch of a mascot which we will use to entertain and encourage young fans, into something that is in poor taste. That was not our intention and again we apologize.
We would like to emphasize that we as an organization take seriously the dangers associated with fire, understand its potentially devastating effects and acknowledge that those in our nation who are called upon to face and fight fires on a daily basis are truly heroes.
We apologize.” – Brian Petrovek, President, Adirondack Flames.

So incredibly lame that they felt the need to issue an apology.
I believe their beat writer should take some if not most of the blame on this. She's the one who tweeted out:
Quote:
In telling of his story, Scorch overpowered a firefighter. That happened.

A full summary of Scorch's debut, including his survival from the fire of 1864 and his overpowering a firefighter: http://bit.ly/ZuiUD1
Along with a picture of the mascot standing over the firefighter. This was before any video or any comments from the actual AHL Flames were made.
At face value, that looks bad. And could have been worded much differently. The beat writer is actually starting to annoy me as she puts far too much of her personal opinion into things and doesn't report on the facts.
