Then go to the Casino after for a few more, and wonder why you are a) broke and b) wickedly hungover. . .

Of course, it's 100% from the heroin in the beer.

I also believe the mood and atmosphere plays a large role in the effects of dome beer.

As other have stated, 4 dome beers is equivalent to more than a 6 pack.

Essentially, if you buy 2 beers to start the game, and 2 during the first intermission, and finish them during the second period, you've put back a 6 pack in less than 2 hours. Add on top, the general atmosphere of a good time, and you'll be feeling a lot drunker than you would at home, drinking at a slower pace, alone, or with a few other people.

We were talking about this the other day- I really think Labatt must have had them clean out their system or something. Ever since they switched from Canadian to Kokanee/Keiths I found the heroin effect seemed to also have disappeared.

Even during the WJC when they switched it back to Canadian, the effect was gone.

I'm usually good for two beer per period. Expect that time I tripped while walking up the stairs and split two full beers on a guy sitting on the end seat. That was way too much alcohol consumption. If that was you sorry man.

For the prices I'm paying for beer and food, it had better have heroin in it.

6 pints in 2 hours is not that much.

Can you go expand on your thought that the "atmosphere plays a large role in the effects of dome beer".

Actually affects or perceived affects?

Yup. Was there last Thursday. Says 20 oz right on the bottom of the cup.

Seriously, I think it's a combination of various factors.

1. People rush to 7:00 games without eating and buy two beers and sit down but don't get substantial food until the 2nd intermission. The Dome beer gets absorbed on an empty stomach.

2. The feeling of vertigo from climbing all the stairs, the rake of the seats up the sides of the dome, height of the nosebleeds.

3. The ambient temperature in the Dome is cold because of the ice, therefore the alcohol tastes sweeter and you can drink it faster.

4. More dissolved C02 in the beer due to pumping it from the basement through gas lines.

5. A cup is about 20 ounces. They are also filled up so you chug the top portion quickly while walking to avoid spillage. That can cause more light-headedness.

6. Atmosphere. Drinking at a hockey game is like an intense "fun-drunk" experience combined with anadrenaline rush and a sense of excitement and anticipation.

As I understand, and this is what I just heard (ie I have no source), that the dome use to have all the beer kegs in one central location (or area specific) and pumped it to each individual draft tap in the building. Because of this it cost more to pump and pressurize the kegs with CO2 so instead they used N2O (laughing gas).

I know now that kegs are located locally for each beer vendor so its no longer the case. However it would make a lot of sense if it was N2O, your drink 4 beers and get faaaar more buzzed than you regularly would due to the laughing gas bubbles, but the buzz does not last as long as alcohol normally would. Additionally it would never show up in the alcohol content reading of the beer (Both CO2 and N2O both have molecular weights of 44g/mol so it would not affect the density of the beer which is used in measuring the alcohol content)

6 pints in 2 hours or a pint every 20 minutes would land me flat on my ass, but that's me.

As for the atmosphere statement, maybe it's just me again, but I notice, that the way I feel is impacted by my surroundings.
If I'm sitting at home watching the game and drink 4 beers, it's a somber setting, the only excitement being the game itself, so at the end of the game, I'm still somber and relaxed, I don't feel "drunk". If I'm at a bar with friends, it's a little more upbeat, more lively, if I drink the same amount, in the same time, the atmosphere will play a role in how I feel, which will be more lively, more upbeat "Drunker". At the Dome, I am there for a good time, the atmosphere is loud, energetic, and more of a party. If I again, drink the same amount, in the same time, I am going to feel a lot "drunker" than I would at home, because my attitude is geared towards party mode. I am wanting to feel drunker, so I do.

I can't imagine it would be legal to give people N20. And I think it would be way more expensive than Co2 anyway.

Empty stomach, bigger beers than usual, the rushed feeling you get so you pound them back so you can get 2 more at intermission. The atmoshere is also huge. I can drink almost a 26 of rye in a night of cards and I feel drunk but alright. If I'm somewhere where my adrenaline is going and I'm yelling at people/inanimate objects I feel the booze hit me way harder.

I think that there have been studies comparing a group blindly drinking real beer and non-alcoholic beer. Those drinking the non-alcoholic beer reported the same feelings of being drunk as those drinking the real beer, (based on their expectation they were drinking real beer).

University of Washington I think - will look for links . . .

Whew! I misread your post as 'people are just bad at meth'. I think I'll lay off all intoxicants this evening.

They have a little "20" stamped in the plastic at the bottom of the cup, which usually indicates the capacity in ounces. I believe the "bottoms up" cups only hold 18 oz.

1 US pint = 16 US oz = 473.176 mL
1 Imp pint = 20 Imp oz = 568.261 mL
20 US oz = 20.8168 Imp oz = 591.471 mL

Regular can of beer = 355 mL
Super can of beer = 473 mL
Regular bottle of beer = 341 mL

Another factor that I don't think has been mentioned is that games run a lot faster than they used to. Unless a game goes into OT, it's very rare for most games to go beyond the 2:30 mark. When I was a kid, I remember games routinely pushing 3 hours, and often running over the 3 hour mark.

This came up while touring the Minhas brewery here in Calgary.

The tour guide said that they have to pump CO2 through the pipes since the keg pipes are so long going all throughout the dome. The extra carbonation causes the beer to hit you quicker and harder.

Really? You'd think it would be the opposite considering advertisment breaks and what not. What changed? Less penalties and stoppages?
