I'm wondering about this as well. And it's pretty unusual for medical staff not to have caught this, no?

He wasn't likely going to stick with the team this year.
Let him stay in the NHL with the trainers, make a nice little paycheck on the IR; rehab the shoulder properly, then go an dominate the O.

Though if Sportsnet isn't just being melodramatic, it may be a moot point. They are speculating that he's done for the year if he goes under the knife.
I would say any analysis on a return date is very premature at this point. If he's a quick healer he would absolutely be back for some significant playing time somewhere this year. If surgery isn't needed who knows, could be back way sooner then expected.

The paranoid pessimist part of me is asking what the recovery rate is from these injuries? Is Bennett already damaged goods?

It's not baseball where pitcher's are basically done.

It shouldn't make that much of a difference as long as he does all the recovery things right (and the trainers will do that)

Actually, nobody has ever recovered from one of these injuries. You see, Bennett is suffering from an advanced case of trapezius interruptus. His arm is almost completely detached from his body. It's hanging on by a flap of skin and a bit of chewing gum that he used to keep it from flopping around. Four of his fingers have already turned green, and he smells like the third month of a city garbage strike. His thumb still shows signs of life, and wiggles independently, but that may just be the colony of Tanzanian salami maggots that have taken up residence in the knuckles.

The only known treatment for this dread condition is to amputate everything from the neck down.

Prognosis: Bennett's head will spend several weeks rehabbing in a jar, but should be ready to resume full physical contact before Christmas. About that time, he will announce that he is changing sports, and expects to have a long and illustrious career as a curling rock.

There. Doesn't it feel good to get all the panic out of your system at once?

Knee and shoulder surgeries are far better and more durable than they used to be. There's no reason to think he won't be as good as ever, if he's patient.

TSN was saying this injury and surgery is the same one Taylor Hall had. So that calms my nerves a bit. He's been pretty good since he came back.

Granted he did say it took him 1.5 years until he felt confident it was totally strong again where he no longer worried about it.

ya but Hall is a wimp, Sam seems like the kind of kid that'll do whatever it takes and if he's rehabbing it and is being followed by professionals, he'll do anything and everything in his power to get as good as he can as quick as he can.

It was those pull ups that did him in.

Get Bennett the shoulder surgery now so he is fully ready to go for 2015.
Get it done so this isn't a reoccurring injury. Too bad he had a real good chance of making the team but on the other hand at least he is not being rushed.

The medical staff are not House or Sherlock Holmes. They're not there to make deductions in case their client isnt being entirely truthful with them.

He really should have told them.
