The funny part of the "Vladdy Hockey" thing was that they thought they were mocking Flames fans without realizing that "Johnny Hockey" originated at Boston College. They can't even mock/taunt properly.

There's nothing wrong with inviting a talented player to your camp, as long as you know whether or not you can make him a contract offer.

If you can't sign him then why invite him, you would be taking playing time away from the players whose talents you should be evaluating(your prospects). And even if he is good enough for you to want to draft later, then everyone will know about him and it will be a lot harder for you to pick him up at the draft, if he is as good as you think he is.

The Flames invited Hunter Smith to their training camp last season, but he declined in favour of attending another team's camp to which he was also invited.
Let's not pretend that Edmonton did something ridiculous by inviting Tkachev to camp. Teams invite draft eligible players who had passed through their first draft to camps all the time. But what Edmonton did do, which was really, REALLY dumb was attempting to sign him to a contract. I think that their signalled high interest, and the fact that this was a national newsworthy blunder has probably dramatically increased any attention that Tkachev will now receive now until the 2015 draft, and Edmonton won't get him.

if my Moncton sweater wasn't an older design I'd put Tkachev's name it.

Yeah. I have Oilers friends that were mocking it and I had to explain he got the name didn't come from Flames fans. Most of them think that Flames fans gave it to him.

Can someone help me out here?
What I don't understand is how not one NHL team took a gamble on this kid with a 7th rounder or something? If he is that good now to be considered for an NHL contract and to go as high as the second round next year, then why did he get passed on? Did he have a bad season or something?

He was 140 lbs at the draft. Unlike Gaudreau, I think the heightened possibility that he could be a Russian flight risk likely compounded things.

Well for starters the dude is tiny. Like Teeny Tiny. He makes Johnny Hockey look like The Incredible Hulk.
