Maybe with this signing, people will stop thinking the flames are tanking.

I think that with this signing we're a shoe-in to finish in the mid to low 20s.

Engelland is big, but he hasn't show me to be a guy who is really dependable as a shut-down guy yet.

So, how many defensemen on the team would you describe as shut-down defensemen?

Wideman and Russell, definitely not.

Brodie is taking leaps offensively, and he's no defensive liability, but he lacks a real edge physically and I wouldn't say his defensive game is a strength.

Smid's game is to be a physical shut-down defenseman, and he's a 4-5 in that regard, and Giordano has a very good all around game.

So, IMO, you have two guys who can be counted on as really reliable in the defensive zone. Adding another should have been a much bigger priority than adding a Wideman clone.

I like the term of the contract. This time next year we can move on from this junk.

He is a replacement for Derrek Smith ... one that Hartley likes.... Sort of like Begin in Hartley year #1. He will have about the same impact as Smith and Begin.

We could get rid of Wideman because of Diaz in the same way we were able to trade Iginla because we had Begin.

Except Wideman isn't Iginla, Diaz isn't Begin, and we did get rid of Iginla once we got Begin...

Nice!

Really like Diaz. I work with 2 Habs fans and they echo'd the suicide pass tendency of Diaz, but they loved him otherwise. Suicide passes seems to be a very very easy thing to coach out of him, so this is a great add to our lacking D.

I'm ok with the signing, but I almost wish it had been for a lot more money so that we could have dealt with the forward logjam without worrying about the cap floor.

And before someone else says it, yes, I realize that people would have also complained about the ridiculous contract if we'd signed him to a $3M deal.

You were talking about a #7 Dman.

Maybe you're expectations have gotten a little high for that role

Meh - 7th D to fill-in for injuries. As long as he doesn't throw up those suicide passes, not much to complain about at all. Personally would have preferred Brookbank as he was a steadier presence on D, and apparently a great locker-room presence (which as a 7th D, is adding something), but I guess the Flames wanted someone a bit more dynamic.

Not really a fan, but good on him for securing an NHL job.

He'll have the same value as Butler during the last trade deadline.

I watched 3 pre season games in which Diaz played. I thought he looked pretty good in two of them. And not so good in the other.

But honestly, I think I prefer him over Wideman. I'm hoping Wideman gets bumped out by someone this season. Diaz, Sieloff or Wotherspoon.

He's one of the guys on the team that I think does not earn his paycheck. I can not believe we're paying him $5.25 million for the next 3 seasons.

Jones is the other.

We don't know what Butler's value was at the trade deadline.

Diaz was also traded for a 5th last year, so its not out of the question that he could have value at the deadline.

Diaz earned a spot...competition is not a bad thing

some of you think young guys should just be handed jobs

its also comical how young most of our "old guys" are
