Setoguchi making the team is a joke.

They talked so much bull about it being a meritocracy... he has been one of the worst forwards in camp.

Further, there is almost no upside to keeping him - are they trying to inflate his value to get an extra pick at the deadline? Seems very foolish when the upside is a 3rd rounder at best and you lose a year of NHL development time for a youngster.

Disappointing decision.

If you expected Baertschi to stay then you're delusional. I think the writing was on the wall yesterday on that one.

Jooris I can understand an argument for, but does he bring this team something it needs or doesn't have already? Not really, no. He'll get his chance soon enough.

Gaudreau and Granlund are with the team still which is encouraging.

Not disappointed in Jooris being sent down. For forwards it leaves Gaudreau and Granlund (IR) up here and Bennett might play up to nine games, but I think most would agree that we'd take any of those three ahead of Jooris.

Really disappointed in the Flames.
They should have kept Jooris and demoted Setoguchi.

Just hope there is a plan in place to trade Seto and bring back Jooris in the near future... otherwise its just more Flames BS ... "Always Earned, Never Given".... sure sounds like a pile of crap to me right now.

I feel like we're going to (need to?) see a trade soon for a dman. Absolutely have a logjam at forward, and it's going to be just as bad or worse next season.

I think they are just betting that over a full season, Setoguchi has more of a chance to add to the offense and Treliving did say his biggest concern is where the goals will come from.

I really don't think Setoguchi was Jooris's main competition. If anything, it was going to be Byron or Colborne (or Bollig on the wing) that Jooris would need to supplant.

I'm very disappointed Jooris got sent down. What more did he have to do to make the team? What does Setoguchi provide that he doesn't?

Jooris "earned" his spot; Setoguchi didn't.

More hot air from management; most of us knew this would happen from the start.

Setoguchi over Jooris?

Always earned, never given?

The competition was never between the rookies and the vets, regardless of how poorly the vets played. It was only between the rookies for what looks to be one available roster spot.

Too bad. A lot less to go and see down at the 'dome this year, IMO.

Very disappointed in the cuts. Jooris and Baertschi made strong cases to stay with the big club this year. Maybe Bennett gets his 9 games and one of them gets called up to take his place.

Granlund is only up because of his injury... he will be in Abby asap.

Jooris is the guy who should have made it over Setoguchi. Baertschi needed to go down as the left side is blocked, at least until Glencross gets traded. Should have invested some NHL playing time in Jooris and let him work with Hartley, it is more beneficial to the team long term than giving ice time to an older washout player in the hope you can get an extra mid round pick at the deadline.

Also and more importantly, all the talk about earning it and spots available told to young players goes right out the window after this - Setoguchi was terrible in camp.

Fans have a very good reason to be upset today.

Jooris being cut in favour of Setoguchi has just showed us our management & coaching staff isn't true to their words.

All the 1 way contracts make the team with a single rookie. Rebuild my ass.

"Meritocracy" was/is just a BS buzz word....again.

Most fans and I'm sure the young guys themselves are likely very frustrated and dissapointed.

I think they're looking at the fact that Setoguchi has a history of scoring in this league, whereas Jooris does not. Goal scoring = biggest concern for Treliving.

I think they want to give Seto some regular season time to see if he can regain any semblance of his former self. If he becomes extra baggage then you can bet a kid will come up to take his place. And I think they got a good enough look at Jooris to know that he can be one of those guys when/if that time comes.

It makes sense to me.

Came expecting a great deal of crying and whining about Setoguchi. Leaving satisfied.

Completely unsurprised that the Flames are going to give him a chance into the regular season - and anyone paying attention should have expected it. That said, barring a major improvement, I still think he ends up on waivers before October is out.

Not surprised about Sven. He had a good camp (not great) but we just have too much depth on LW: Hudler, Glencross, Raymond, Gaudreau. His time will come with injuries (Glencross and Raymond, historically, are prone) and trades. Sucks about Jooris in that he had a better camp than Jones (didn't help that he scored last night) and Setoguchi (who has been absolute garbage).

I only got to see the pre-season game last night, but it sounds from here that Jooris had a great camp, so a bit disappointing they couldn't find a spot for him.

I am wondering 2 things - maybe they have no interest in burying money in the AHL (no one was taking Setogouchi on waivers). 2-way contracts go down.
Also - are the coaches, GM, & Burke all seeing something in Sven we aren't?

We are a 27th place team. I'm wondering why Johnny Hockey hasn't been sent down to the AHL to tear it up and enjoy a winning culture - a beef up at the same time.

If Setoguchi is playing the way he has been and is still on the team by November, I will be disappointed
