If we could get Leddy and Versteeg for a late pick, I'd be all over it like a fat kid on pie. Maybe we could trade Seto for the two of them....

Guys like Versteeg and Seto don't have to play. We could put either of them on waivers and/or demote them in favour of young guys who deserve to play. Leddy would probably our third best defenseman and has a bright future.

Ok, so what, we have Seto, Versteeg, and Jones scratched all the time? Those guys are going to want ice time and even if we demote them they are still taking ice time away from somebody we are trying to develop.

Brandon Kozun had 3 points for the Leafs tonight. I've been a big fan of his since his days with the Hitmen and his interviews on the FAN 960.
Hopefully he can make the Leafs out of camp or at the very least get his first regular season NHL game this year.

There's talk of him around here winning a job there and them having to 'Colborne' Carter Ashton.
Not sure if the Flames would be interested in moving anything for Ashton but he is big, not sure he has a ton of offensive upside in the NHL though.

Westgarth has been released by the Oilers. They're also keeping Nurse with the big club for now. Took a look at their roster to start the season.......not good.

I'm assuming Draisaitl is going to make the team? Has anyone watched enough of their pre-season to comment on how he's looked?

Oilers waived Aulie, Lander, Pinizzotto, Pitlick. I think Pitlick would be worth a waiver pickup for a team with an opening on their 4th line that doesn't need to win immediately, he finally figured out the A last year and has the build and speed to be a good energy/checking player imo.
Draisaitl has looked very young, offensively OK and error prone defensively, but unfortunately for the Oilers he is better than anybody else they have at centre except Hopkins. He is going to be their 2nd line centre and really get thrown to the Wolves.
Oilers fans seem steamed that Marincin got sent down, they feel he was one of their better players.
Hopefully we don't have a similar scenario with Setoguchi making the team over somebody who played better than him in camp this week... would kind of throw the meritocracy credo out the window.

On one hand I feel bad for Westgarth who I think is a good guy and can really help a team, on the other hand I'm glad to see the Oilers missed the opportunity to add that kind of personality to their roster.
Marincen is a pretty good player. Not sure what is going on there, but he's definately one of their best blueliners already.

Doesn't have to clear waivers. Probably giving Nurse a 9 game tryout.

Ya and the big thing from my perspective with the Oilers cutting Westy is that with Gadzic out they are relying on the Pinizzotto guy to be their policeman until Gadzic gets healthy and he is a middleweight at best, also they are assuming Gadzic comes back 100%.
In our division this year that is a big mistake, especially with such a young roster and so few other fighters.
Pinizzotto better have some ice bags ready.
Worst case scenario a guy like Nurse is going to have to fight a bit right off the bat with nobody else really there to answer the bell aside from Hendricks.

Or you just don't fight. The NHL is moving more towards that then having people fight who are not fighters.

Pinizzotto is on waivers, I assumed he is going down to OKC?

I think they are just going to clear him while the waiver wire is full so they can send him down once Gadzic is healthy without exposing him again.
At least that's my guess... I can't imagine them facing the Canucks and Flames back to back to open the season with no fighter in a lineup with that many kids. It will be open season for guys like Kassian and Sesito and the Flames carrying 3 heavys this year... got to be scary for a young guy playing against those teams with no protection.
You'd think they learned their lesson with all the injuries they've had over the last 4 or 5 years to their players from guys running around against them.
Or maybe their fishbowl fighter is ready to come back sooner than expected.

The Oilers tried that strategy for a few years... broken jaws, concussions, etc, resulted.
If a heavyweight is playing against a team with no enforcer who are basically saying there is no place for you in the league, you're damned right they are going to take a few big runs at hitting players on the other team to show them they made a mistake.
The team with no enforcer can try to hurt them on the scoreboard... if they even get penalized, but they are risking losing guys to injury and god forbid a guy like Pinizzotto or Nurse tries to fight McGrattan to answer for a smaller teammate getting leveled. I love seeing grats win but that just isn't even fair... it could be curtains on the season for either of those two.
