Sven's had a good camp. Definitely looks better than years previous.
That being said though, I feel he's a clear step below Gaudreau and Jooris so far this preseason. Sven's not produced nearly as much as either and has had plenty of opportunity to do so.
It's not really fair to have him in the conversation with those other two specifically.
Gaudreau makes this team, Jooris has earned a RW slot. Has Sven really earned a spot over Raymond, Glencross, Hudler , Gaudreau and Jooris? I don't think so.
And if not for Granlunds Concussion precautions, he hasn't even done in all of preseason anything to beat Granlunds shortened preseason.
I think Sven will get his shot, but he is pretty far down my list of players to call up. But I should be clear, he's not been anywhere near a disappointment. Just hasn't done enough to warrant making the team on opening day.
I don't think Jones or Setoguchi get much ice time if these kids can keep up their paces. Leaving room for Granlund, Jooris, Gaudreau. Those are my three picks to make the team and the Flames will make the room.

Re: 35th. Yeah I was pretty annoyed at how low Jooris was ranked. Clearly everyone forgot about him and just looked at his numbers in the AHL. I would have had him at the early 20s at least. There's no way he's worse than guys like Acolatse, Roy, Wolf, VanBrabant, Cundari, and Harrison.

Looking throuh the posts and readng Bingo's most recent story, you get worried about a plethora of things;
Who stays and who goes?
Who gets first call-ups?
What impact will it have on the players being sent down?
Who should play with who to ensure development?
It gets you thinking.. 3, maybe even 2 years ago, we'd have killed to be in the situation we're in now. "Sending down potential NHL-ready players?! You must be mental" CP screams to the management.
The majority of the late cuts are who'll we see at some point this season, and all are players that are coming in (and can do, of course) to produce. To fight for a spot. They're no role-fillers.
We're blessed at the minute. It really is an exciting time. Imagine what this team'll be like in another 2-3 years time.

Adirondack should contend for a championship this year. That's a great atmosphere to develop young kids in, particularly with a coach with the resume as a winner like Ryan Huska down there.

I'm not that worried about Ferland. The guy is the kind of player Burke/Treliving love. He'll be back as soon as there's a spot available.
The Flames really should not have signed as many veterans as they did to fill out their roster. I don't hate the signings themselves - just the fact they left almost no room for rookies.

If it's between Jooris and Gaudreau, that one is simple then.
Gaudreau makes Jooris better.

I'll give you credit for throwing 1 vote his way at 27th, but don't pretend to be annoyed that he fell to 35th, and say you "had him in the early 20s at least".

Can the team even reach the floor if they demote David Jones for example?
Hartley and Trevling will win my eternal admiration if they actually follow through and demote some of these guys....
I just have the feeling that they wont....and this whole training camp will be pointless....
Hope I'm wrong.

Yeah agreed on the veterans part. But I don't think anyone believed that the young guys would have pushed this hard.
It's nice to see a training camp battle for once instead of just giving pluggers time like we used to pre rebuild
2012 - Comeau, Blair Jones, Begin, Jackman,
2011 - Kostopoulos, Hagman, Morrison
2010 - Kotalik, Hagman
Seriously Hagman was the worst....and Kostopoulos I mean come on he had 12 points in 81 games in 2011... And then management was like hmm kostopoulos isn't working out let's see who we can bring in to really jump start the 4th line. "I know how about Steve Begin"... Boom 4 goals 4 assists... granted it was a half season.
I know our prospects weren't great then. I'm just happy to see that era over

I think if any two of Backlund, Jones and Raymond aren't 100% come the home opener, Jooris and Gaudreau should both be playing.
If all our day to day forwards are healthy, then Gaudreau at the very least should still be here.

Hartley has said the team's motto is "Always earned, never given".
I just hope it's given once earned.

Yes. $3m of his salary would count against the cap anyway.

Can only bury about 900k in the minors under the new CBA. Something like that.

If they are having trouble reaching the floor why not give Brodie a raise and a long term contract or are they not able to under the CBA?

Anybody have a link to a list of the remaining 30?
Kids are getting close. 3 injured guys and 27 healthy left in camp. Also Setoguchi has been one of the worst players all camp and is surely only around because of his 1 way deal.

Wouldn't take effect this year. You can look at all things player contract related here http://www.capgeek.com/flames/ and play around with things yourself with the arm chair gm tool.

You have to remember that we're looking at things from the perspective of a fully healthy line-up. That is something that the Flames did not have for any of the 82 games last season.
All it takes is a couple of injuries and the last demotions become the first promotions.

Just curious about this hypothetical question:
If we for example send David Jones to the minors and he is claimed on waivers, would we even be able to ice a team that reached the cap floor? And if we couldn't; what are the implications? forfeiting games?
I know this would never happen....just curious about what the rules state. Anyone know?
