man i feel bad for ferland a bit. He led pentincton in points, then had some strong games and has the size to be effective based on the preseason games.
not sure what else he could have showed to have made the team. I'm sure they let him know how close he is to being back in Calgary.
no surprises otherwise, other than young guys being cut, but think that might be more about injuries.

You can have 23 men in the NHL, so there only needs to be 7 more cuts. 1G/2D/4F.

He had a very good preseason, he needs to work on his consistancy over the span of a game.
I have no doubt that he'll be at the top of the call up list.
Sieloff came back a long way but he has plenty of work to do on his in zone positioning.
Klimchuk really didn't have much of a chance, another year of kicking butt in jr and going to the worlds will be very good for him.

No, he was born in 1995. He can play in the AHL once/if the Regina Pats are eliminated while the Heat are still playing.
Poirier was born in 1994, so he will start the year with the Heat.

Hmmm... perhaps. If their plan is to give Wotherspoon the start in the AHL (with 23-25+ minutes a night) until injuries or Wideman is moved and are looking at Diaz or the waiver-wire/trade-market for a #6/7, then that makes sense.
I'm not a proponent of trading vets just to make room at the beginning of the year for young guys, but moving Wideman to get Wotherspoon regular NHL minutes (rather than spot duties as the #6/7) would be awesome.

Is there a list of our remaining 30 anywhere?
I'm going to throw out this list, not sure how correct it is:
Ramo, Hiller, Ortio.
Brodie, Giordano, Smid, Russell, Brodie, Wideman, Engelland, Wotherspoon, Cundari.
Jones, Gaudreau, Setoguchi, McGrattan, Hudler, Raymond, Glencross, Jooris, Bennett, Backlund, Byron, Colborne, Monahan, Bollig, Baertschi, Raymond, Stajan, Bouma.
Is that right?

But Klimchuk has played 4 WHL seasons. Doesn't that make him AHL eligible?

Remaining Players:
Raymond
Monahan
Hudler
Gaudreau
Backlund
Colborne
Glencross
Stajan
Jones
Bollig
Bouma
McGratton
Byron
Setoguchi
Bennett
Baertschi
Granlund
Jooris
Giordano
Brodie
Smid
Wideman
Russell
Engelland
Diaz
Wotherspoon
Potter
Ramo
Hiller
Ortio
I think we're going 14 forwards, 7 dman and 2 goalies to start the season. So 7 more cuts.
I'd say: Ortio, Potter, Wotherspoon are easy.
The forwards depending on who's healthy...Granlund is exempt right now. So 3 guys. Bennett gets sent back...Sven get sent down as well (sucks)....veteran forward gets waived, dunno who...
Lineup:
Glencross-Backlund-Hudler
Raymond-Monahan-Colborne
Gaudreau-Stajan-Jooris
Bouma-Byron-McGratton
Bollig/Jones/Setogouchi

My thoughts on how this will shake out:
Green=almost assuredly safe and on the opening day roster
Orange=in contention for one of the last few spots
Red=has a shot at a roster spot, but is a long shot
Purple=outside extreme long shot at the roster, but still has a chance
Bold=almost assuredly cut due to injury status or extreme lack of talent
So here's who's left:
Forwards (18):
Raymond (injured)
Monahan
Hudler
Gaudreau
Backlund (injured)
Colborne
Glencross
Stajan
Jones (injured)
Bollig
Bouma
McGrattan
Byron
Setoguchi
Bennett
Baertschi
Reinhart
Ferland
Granlund (injured)
Knight
Poirier (injured)
Klimchuk (injured)
Arnold
Elson
Jooris
Defence (9):
Giordano
Brodie
Smid
Wideman
Russell
Engelland
Brookbank (try-out)
Diaz (try-out)
Yonkman (try-out)
Wotherspoon (injured)
Potter (injured)
Kulak
Sieloff
Cundari
Culkin
Ramage
Acolatse
Goalies (3)
Hiller
Ramo
Ortio
I've upgraded Jooris from red to orange due to his 2 goal game last night. I think he's really impressed at camp and might actually be one of the guys who makes this team. I am no longer skeptical that he will start the year with the Flames. IMO, he has just as good a chance as Baertschi, Bennett, Jones, and Setoguchi. Bennett stays as long as Backlund is hurt, so he might get a few games to start the year. I think the other 4 are battling for spots and Jones gets his by default of being injured.
I think Gaudreau should make the team opening night, but you know that it will still be a difficult decision for management to give him a spot. I think even if he starts on the farm he'll only be down there for a few weeks before getting recalled. He'll play pretty close to a full year in the NHL. But I think he's all but locked up his spot on the team unless management sees it differently than just about everyone else.
The defense is set IMO, Potter and Wotherspoon will begin the year on the injured reserve and likely both are sent down for conditioning once they are healthy. I think Diaz has earned the 7th man spot for now and will be battling those 2 for it the rest of the year, but he'll get first crack at it.
Here's my opening day roster if nobody gets healthy:
Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler
Baertschi-Colborne-Byron
Glencross-Stajan-Jooris
Bouma-Bennett-McGrattan
Extras: Bollig, Setoguchi
Giordano-Brodie
Russell-Engelland
Smid-Wideman
Extra: Diaz
Ramo-Hiller
Injured reserve: Raymond, Jones, Backlund, Granlund, Potter, Wotherspoon

I don't believe that the 5 games he played in 2010/2011 count towards a full WHL season.
Edit -
Quote:
Players aged 15–20 are eligible to play in the WHL, though 15-year-olds are permitted to play only five games unless their midget team's season has ended.

I have a feeling that guys like Granlund and Ferland will have shown they are NHL players by the end of the season.
I know a lot of people want to see guys like Jones and Seto gone in favour for the younger guys seemingly playing better, but it doesn't all just happen at once. If the kids are showing through their call ups and extended stays are consitent NHL-calibre performers, they will find a way to move out the vets not pulling their wait.
