I would love it if he did but the numbers say no. With the work ethic Hartley draws out of his kids I would love to see Seto and Jones sent anywhere but here and Glencross traded away to make some more room for the young guys who go all out every game but I don't see that happening.

You know what I would like to see, is the ability of a team to declare a rebuild to the league. Then a portion of the league minimum would be waived for a period of 2 years. I'm thinking $5-$7m per season. This would allow more room for younger players who, like Jooris who are hungrier to make the big league than some bum who's been in the league for 10 years who just mails it in for 82 games because he knows he has a spot due to the team needing to get to the minimum. I think rebuilding teams are just as well served by brining in the younger, hungrier guys than fielding an unexciting team, does nothing for the viewers and season ticket holders.

Just to make sure teams don't abuse this rule it would only be allowed for a period of 2 years over a15 year span. Without this part ofthe rule Edmonton would always take advantage of it!

Can't see the union going for this as it is controlled by the older guys who will want to save their jobs.

My guess is yes, he is the mostly likely player of the candidates to land a NHL job IMO. Gaudreau and Sven follow closely. I could see Bennett get a few games, but I think he will play the year in junior.

Yeah, sorry, thats sort of what I meant. He'd have to clear waivers and its highly unlikely.

If he's as bad as some believe, he'll either clear waivers or won't be missed if he's claimed.

Highly unlikely he clears waivers? If he gets claimed, then he's someone else's problem.

I understand that, but I get the impression that Setoguchi was signed for two reasons:

1. To comply with Treliving's policy of seasoning kids in Junior/AHL so someone has to play the NHL minutes.

2. If hes any good, to flip at the deadline for whatever anyone is willing to give.

Not unless he beats out Bouma.

Otherwise he should be the first call up for a bottom 6 forward.

Always earned. Never given.

Not saying it's either Seto or Jooris making the team, but lets look at these two as an example. And I don't think you can simply earn a spot with a standout training camp, it would be asinine to disregard everything else you've seen or know about the player outside of camp.

What has Seto done to earn a spot? So-so camp, as advertised pretty much. His stock has been trending downwards for the past couple seasons. He did play some great hockey back in the SJ days but what has he done since then, with lesser linemates (you know, the type he'll be playing with here)? I feel if he stays on this roster, it's hardly earned and mostly given.

Jooris, on the other hand. Comes in as a fresh face and impresses the staff enough to give him a contract. Has done everything asked of him and surpassed expectations of both the fans and, I'd wager, management. He has been a bright spot all camp long and has outshone players like Seto in almost every way. He may be lacking experience in the bigs but what are rebuilding years for if you're not going to let such players gain experience. If he makes the team it will truly be earned, and not given.

I completely agree. My comment was more a tongue in cheek jab at the contingent of posters who have anointed Setoguchi as the blockade to seeing all the kids all the time.

Anyone else think Bouma's starting job is in jeopardy? With Colborne going back to centre and the competition at LW, his starts could be limited.

I think the flames have put themselves in a tough position with their solgan. Nothing givin, everything earned (paragraphing). A number of prospects have outperformed players with one way contracts including Jooris. If the flames demot these players to the AHL they've broken their promise. I see some trades coming or some veterans sitting in the press box to make room for up to three guys. Jooris, Ferland and Johnny should all be on the team. Sven isn't there yet and Bennett should get 9.

Apart from Flames draftees, Jooris has been the biggest standout. He had a very good camp last year as well, was a bit surprised he didn't get a call-up, was kind of overshadowed by Street, Reinhart and Granlund. If he wants to stick in the NHL, consistency is key. He was not an offensive leader in Abbotsford last season and needs to prove himself as a consistent offensive threat. He might get a similar look that Street got, we'll see.

I alluded to this in another thread, but why do people assume that the "merit" is only accumulated in the month of September?

IMO past accomplishments and future projections based on past accomplishments warrant merit as well. It's great that some young players outplayed some vets, but it has always been the case that they need to do more than just that to cancel out the goodwill merit accumulated by some vets.

It also has to be what is best for the players and their development, which should supersede simple performance earned merit in camp.

Jooris had 3 fights in Abby last year.

He is 24 years old so this is his window to make it. Not likely to mature with another year in the AHL.

Had a great pre-season last year. He might he be a better NHL than AHL player.

He skates well enough to keep up with Gaudreau and seems to be able to settle into a good spot to benefit from Gaudreau drawing them in and dishing it out.

I've seen plenty of players slowly improve after their 24th birthday (Paul Byron for a recent example), and you have to remember that last year was Jooris' first year playing pro hockey after a college career. If we have patience for other similar college graduates in their first couple of pro years (Gaudreau, Arnold, Agostino, Hanowski, Knight, Ramage), then how are we supposed to assume that Jooris is washed up after this year? You have the strangest ideas about prospects…or just hockey in general…that I have ever heard.

I actually wouldn't mind a Gaudreau- Colborne- Jooris line.

Raymond - Backlund - Jones
Glencross - Monahan- Hudler
Gaudreau - Colborne - Jooris
Bouma - Stajan - McGrattan

Bollig - Byron

Nope.

There's always that one guy who sticks around camp longer then you thought they would (Remember John Armstrong) and this year that guy is Jooris. He doesn't have nearly the pedigree nor the track record to warrent a roster spot yet. He'll go down to Adirondack and if he can demonstrate there that he's not just a guy having a good couple of weeks then he's in the conversation for a call-up to the show.
