Spector's a true blue goof. On chad he called him a little pipsqueak who would never bring his game at the NHL level when he was signed in the spring.
You want comedy?, search some of Spectors pod casts when he gets asked about the Flames. sometimes I swear he allmost starts to hyperventilate.

Gaudreau #1 on USA Todays "Top 10 Rookies to Watch For"

"He is one of those players who in a lot of ways is like Patrick Kane," former NHL general manager Craig Button said. "They speed up when they need to. They slow down when they need to. Every time you think they are ready to give up the puck, they give it up on their terms. They dictate plays with the puck."
"You can go through the league and find elite-level skill players who aren't doing it by brute or brawn," Treliving said. "They are doing it by hockey IQ. That's where Johnny is. I'm intrigued to see where it goes." - Treliving

No, we'll give him at least until Halloween.

With the 104th overall pick, the Flames select LW John Gaudreau

Would it though? If a veteran can't beat out a couple rookies, maybe they deserve to sit or play in the A. I mean think about it, if you're a UFA and you don't want to sign in Calgary because your worried a rookie might steal your ice time then A.) you're probably not an fringe player to begin with and B.) not sure I want a player with that kind of sense of entitlement. The fact that rookies are deservedly beating out veterans would not cast a negative light at all. It shows that we're a team that will always ice the most competitive players we have. That is not a bad reputation to have at all. Would you rather play for a team that already has their line up pencilled in before the preseason hits (cough Edmonton) or a team that wants to be as competitive as possible?

I'm sick of people defending entitled vets with a history of showing a lack of compete that haven't outperformed anyone because of some stupid belief that we're "throwing kids in" like edmonton. Don't you get it, we're NOT. The only reason any of these kids would be on the roster for game 1 next week is if they earn it. ####, it's time to stop living in 2009. An infusion of youth is what this team NEEDS to move forward in this rebuilding process. We're not doing anything near what edmonton is doing.
Priority should be put on icing the best team, not hitting the cap floor. Any vet can sit in the press box and still have their cap hit count.

Calm down. No one is saying that.
You have to understand that teams do have to play politics, especially rebuilding teams that have a lower UFA desirability. We can't just dump players like Seto in the AHL a month after we sign them. The team needs to support the players they've invested UFA contracts into. Only when every avenue has been taken does the waiver wire become an option.

I would think having guys like Setoguci and Jones in the pressbox rotation might snap them into focus a bit. You watch Gaudreau and Jooris getting your minutes, you see your chances to keep earning NHL paycheques evaporating, it might be just what the doctor ordered to shake these guys out of apathy.
If we manage to have kids supplanting vets while those vets are playing above replacement level, it's found money.

The thing is nobody wanted to sign Setoguchi to begin with, he was brought in extremely late to add competition to training camp, the guy has 0 points in the preseason, his competition is a 21 year old fresh out of College with all the skill sets in the world, the team is 5-0 with him in the lineup and he has 5 points in those 5 games.
There is not a sane person on earth who thinks Setoguchi politics or not deserves a slot on this roster over Gaudreau. If free agents use this against the flames in the future they can simple tell them exactly whats above in my previous paragraph.

But they didn't want to sign him to begin with, or they would have signed him to begin with. Instead, they waited almost until the beginning of camp. That's only one step above a PTO. I believe that is the point jg13 was making.

It's because I'm a jerk like that.
But really, this is just me getting tired of people preemptively complaining about Gaudeau's absence from the starting lineup, and then with the supposition that it is because Setoguchi will make the team in his place. When it happens, fine, get upset about it. But the angst is just not worth it at this point. In the end I think what ends up happening is that BOTH Setoguchi and Gaudreau will be on the opening night roster.

See, that isn't the solution either. Setoguchi has been out played by a number of players that could end up being short-changed. I personally thought last night was Setoguchi's best performance in a Flames jersey, and it paled in comparison to the efforts, and results, put forth by other players. It pisses me off that at least two of Gaudreau, Granlund, Ferland, and Baertschi are going to be sent packing and Setoguchi is going to be on the roster.
The same extends to other veterans as well. I just don't see how Wideman keeps a job. And that's with little competition on the blueline. As much as I have developed a deep respect for Stajan I'm left wondering if the team isn't better off without him and one of the young centers filling that role. His leadership is probably something you sit on, but he's almost at the point where he no longer has a position on this roster.
I think it is great we get to have these conversations. How long has it been where we have been able to talk about not just one rookie deserving his shot, but a number of them being ready? The Flames are developing a problem, and it is a good one. No one is being rushed. The young players are just stepping up and proving they are as good as we hoped they would be. The future looks great!

I'm sure this has come up many times in the last couple weeks, but after reading the last 5 pages of reading people wet themselves over him I figured I should go back to the first 5 pages of this thread to see people wet themselves over how small and bad of a pick this was! Thanks for the morning chuckle CPers.
