Is the GST still dropping to 6% on Saturday? I haven't heard much about it.

Yes. To add to that, Telus already has their billing set up to change the GST. If your bill is printed on Friday you pay 7%, on Saturday you pay 6%.

Is the government going to be really picky about it. Are they really pressing the issue, or do they not care, if retailers etc, don't switch to 6% by Saturday.

Well, I would assume that it would come out in tax receipts whether or not they changed, however, I'd also assume that consumers will be picky about it, and retailers will just switch. Could be tax fraud if they don't.

Yah... if you are collecting a 1% tax on everything you sell that doesn't really exist, you could be in trouble.

I wouldn't plan to go shopping on Saturday. Bound to be problems in a lot of stores.

Absolutely!

I'm sure there are tonnes of people who have put off buying that $1000 big screen TV for months in order to get that $10 savings with the GST reduction. I still can't decide how I'm going to spend it all.

I doubt there'll be that many problems. Working retail it was very easy to change the GST charged from our tills. And those were seriously old-fashioned.

I agree. Where you will see issues maybe is mom & pop stores who don't know where the "6" key is on their computer, and their computer guy is out camping.

Sorry, I'm a little out of the loop, but are ALL businesses supposed to be changing their GST to 6%?

Because I'm managing a bar and I haven't done this yet, and didn't even know!

The place I work at "doesn't know". We know and we've made the changes, but we haven't received any kind of notice from the government telling us we need to change or what we need to do.

Things like this in retail when I worked there were dropped the day before it was supposed to happen. (Not GST but let's use changing the exchange rate as an example.) I'm not certain what type of work you do Buff, but I would imagine the government has insured all major corporations have something at their head offices that tell them what they need to know and it's the mom and pop stores that have likely been left in the dark. I mean, how many car advertisements have you seen where you can save the 1% GST already? It's likely to be quite the gong show for a while until everyone gets switched over... although GST numbers will stay the same, I guess they just figure stores will automatically do it because it's not just less they charge the customers, it's less they send to the government as well. It largely doesn't affect business except that the register needs to be updated.

It's pretty simple. Goods or services sold on or after July 1st are 6%. If you still charge 7%, you must give that extra 1% to the gov't; you don't get to keep it.

Those of you in retail/services who didn't know - are you in charge of the billing/receipts? It may very well be that one person will just go in and reprogram the tax rate on the tills at close of business tonight, and everything will happen automatically.

The official government policy is to not directly inform businesses of any tax change (up or down).

It is a firms responsibility to keep informed of any changes.

It is the same with personal income taxes.

My company was all over the change the day it was announced. Our system has already been programmed so that at Midnight, the tax rate on 300 tills goes down.
