Default TSN Westhead: NHLPA warns agents that player contracts with KHL may breach sanctions

The NHL Players' Association is advising player agents that signing their clients to contracts in Russia's KHL may run afoul of recently imposed economic sanctions on Russia, violations that can lead to possible financial or criminal punishments.

"NHLPA email aside, I've always been skeptical of Russian league deals and have purposely avoided them," Curran wrote in an email. "I tried to review Ben's deal for him but cautioned him accordingly."

Like players give a flying **** about Obama and Putin's little power politics games. They're going to go play hockey where they can get paid.

Yeah until their bank accounts get frozen and they get charged and thrown into a legal battle.

It sounds like it might be just a few specific teams that are affected.

Kind of sucks since elite hockey players have very limited places to play that can also match what their market value is.

Dunno about that. The market value of something is only what someone is willing to pay. If a player can't get what he thinks his market value is worth, then he's overestimating his own value.

Yea, but in the case of RFA's they are only able to negotiate with one party in the NHL.

You can't apply market economy principles to that.

I probably didn't choose the best words.

From my understanding, there is just a big drop off in salary after the NHL and KHL. It kind of sucks if option B is taken off the table for them.

The U.S., Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the European Union have all imposed sanctions against Russia. About the only country that produces significant numbers of hockey players that has not taken sanctions against Russia is – Russia itself.
