Icon37 Sens sign Bobby Ryan to 7 year extension ($7.25mil AAV)

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing OTT signs Bobby Ryan to a 7-year extension. AAV just over $7m per.

pretty interesting because many were speculating the Sens wouldn't be able to get this done

...damn. One of my favourite players, would have loved to see him hit free agency next year.

I'm surprised, because they have the tightest budget in the NHL. They are not a cap team, so they are really building around Ryan.

For a budget team.... not the guy I would be paying the big bucks to if I had a choice.

I don't think they had much choice on a star. Their top players don't seem to stick around once they hit free agency. He is a nice piece to build around IMO. They will need a little more however to support him now that Spezza is gone.

Oof, that is a big, big contract for someone like Bobby Ryan, not just dollars, but term. He can be a premiere player though, so hopefully he steps it up.

That's awesome, I hope they can pull things together. They have a decent team but they just need a couple pieces and this is a step in the right direction.

Easy to root for the guy given his past.

I'd love for him to get 40+ this year.

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Bobby Ryan extension breakdown: 6.5 7 7.25 7.5 7.5 7.5 7.5

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Bobby Ryan deal has full NMC/partial NTC: Can't be waived or assigned but has to give list of 10 teams if requested for no trade

I honestly think this is a fair deal for both sides, Ryan gets paid and the sens get a major player who they can build around. Between Ryan, Karlsson and a couple younger players I think they have a bright future.

I worry he's more name than production at this point. He was outscored by Clarke McArthur (and Kyle Turris) last year.

Good for Ryan to get that money and term. But unless he gets some help in Ottawa, I don't see him living up to the deal.

The Sens needed to do this, however. If they lost Ryan, that franchise would have slid down into pure irrelevance.

Bobby Ryan was involved in one of the best weird moments I have ever seen in hockey.

I'm not sure he's a guy you lock up for 7 years at that kind of dough however. He's not the fastest skater, and I can see him tailing off in the last half of that contract.

Not that Ottawa really had a choice at this point. The trade for Ryan doesn't look that great in hindsight and they have been bleeding star players over the last few seasons. They needed to salvage something from the deal and stop the bleeding.

I really like Bobby Ryan, but this seems like too much money.
