It begs the question: Was Tkachev really that good, or did he just look exceptional because he was surrounded by a group of granite-handed muckers?

Not sure why I quoted this one, but the difference between our Ryan O'Reilly issue and this one is that ours was interpretation, which, in my opinion, as each argument was valid, would not have resulted in the Flames losing the pick and O'Reilly, as the Feaster interpretation made sense, while in this one, there is no interpretation whatsoever, it is black and white - you cannot do what the Oilers did.
I recall in our situation, they changed the wording from the initial Memorandum of Understanding to the actual CBA to negate any interpretation argument, and to make the rule clear.

Even then they're not great. Yakupov might end up being the biggest draft bust since DiPietro.

I wouldn't call DiPietro a bust....the way the islanders handled him and gave him that contract has been pretty entertaining.
And Yakapov hasn't been a complete bust, I mean don't you remember that OT goal with that sweet knee slide and the celebration that night?????
If anything, you can always count on the oilers to be entertaining. It's just their off ice product that is fun to watch.

DiPietro was definitely a bust. He was awful even before all of the injuries started piling up. I have no idea what he did to deserve that huge contract.

Hopefully they get more desperate and make even more stupid (read: bold) moves.

Disagree, DiPietro was amazing before the injuries (so for a very short time). I remember watching a game where he Flames outshot the Islanders 50-20 (roughly) and lost 4-2. He stole that game.
Feel bad for the guy, but he was bust because of injuries, not lack of talent.

He only had one decent NHL season in his entire career (2006-07).

He hasn't been good in the preseason. He still waiting for his first shot on goal, and first point I think and he's a minus player.
I think Oiler fans have been hinging their bets on a player who had one good month of play in his two years in the NHL.
He might be a physically talented player, but I believe he's missing a lot in his game.
If he was a mid first round pick they could have developed him. Instead they rushed him.

I guess we can all thank Katz for stepping in and ordering the selection of Yakupov, as the common belief is that the Edmonton brain trust wanted Ryan Murray and were overruled by the owner.

Ryan Murray would have struggled too since they would have started him in the NHL, and Yakupov could be thriving somewhere else where he was developed properly.
Issue with the Oilers is they rush all their young guys into the lineup with no structure.
The will do the same thing this year making Draisaitl their second line center, without any good veteran centers (RNH will get hurt eventually) to help shelter and protect him.

I've been out of town and out of the loop for the preseason, were oiler fans seriously calling him Vladdy Hockey? What a joke franchise.
