What happens with Butler? He said he has no intention of playing in the minors. Does he retire?

Europe / KHL would be my guess... I had thought that last contract he had with the Flames probably would have been his last NHL contract.

No way does he retire, imo. He's making close to half a million this year and could make could money over in Europe also.

Peter Mueller's on Waivers today. Flames should grab him too.

Didn't he say that more in the sense of "yes, I signed a two-way deal, but that doesn't matter because I'm going to work really hard to make the Blues and I'm not planning on playing in the AHL", rather than "I will retire before I play a game in the AHL"?

No thanks to Mueller. He's 26,not sure there's any upside left. Granlund is a better option

Been waiting for the annual 'Mueller is on waivers, we should grab him' post.

What is that - 5 years in a row now?

Yeah, maybe but it should tell him something when 29 other teams didn't want you basically for free.

He's not getting younger. I don't see how he plays in the NHL again unless the Blues face some serious injuries this year.

Don't think he's ever been on waivers until today. I've advocated signing or trading for Mueller before. Many times, I like the game he plays when healthy.

I think that bodes well for every available players in the NHL. Every season someone will say "Flames could use that guy". It doesn't matter if the player is good or not.

Much like every year fans over rate our players. Last year people were thinking we could trade Butler for a second rounder or that he was worth a couple million a year or that he'd be a great addition to most teams.
Guys like Mueller and Butler will only be in the NHL if the team expands to 32 teams.

I think Butler could of started the year in the NHL if he didn't sign with the Blues.

If he was worth it, a team would have taken him. He's on an extremely affordable contract and he's available for free. He has negative value to any team because they have better options. The only teams I can see interested in him are the ones that are tanking for McDavid.

I think Butler is a NHL quality player as a 6th or 7th defenceman. The trouble is the competition is getting tighter every year and some are getting left out where a team would rather have one of their own on the team. I think this is an example that expansion wouldn't dilute the level of play much.

It's not that it's a sudden development this year. It's been gradually changing to where it's a more skilled game because the talent is better. Look at the lines these days. It used to be we'd talk about a top six group of forwards, now it's a top 9. The first three lines are all scoring lines whereas a few years ago, we had the first two lines as scoring lines. The third line was made up of limited skill guys but they had enough ability to play a defensive game where they became the shut down line. Nowadays there is no room for this line and teams just match up skill against skill requiring the top line to be good two way players. The fourth line hasn't changed too much but it has some of what would be defensive specialists as well.

Yep. But that also means fringe NHL defenseman.
