No they didn't. They badly wanted him back and he refused to sign with them.

For once BigTuna is correct. This is pretty much the situation that went down. One could argue what went on behind closed doors and why Burke wanted to leave his position, but fact remains the Ducks tried to retain him.

I think Burke thought Toronto was a challenge he could tackle but found out the hard way that everything is scrutinized and second guessed. The media is almost fan-like with their coverage as all the roller coaster highs and lows that fans undergo are amplified by the media and much like how fans get it in for certain players no matter how irrational so does the Toronto media. I mean you had Don Cherry for crying out loud criticizing Burke for having too many Americans on the team. That sort of criticism simply doesn't happen to other organizations. If anyone can handle that it's Babcock but it's no lock that his work with the Ducks and Wings completely translates to the Leafs as there's just so much politics involved in every little decision with that organization.

Terrible game in Detroit tonight, Wings win 3-0. My son and his buddies went. Tickets on Stub Hub for $8.91. Good thing that's all they paid.

If Alfie was playing those stub hub tics could have been sold to leafs fans for ACC reg season prices

Burke thought the team was closer to being a contender than it actually was. It had nothing to do with scrutiny/second guessing. The team just wasn't as competitive as he tried to sell. He also had a personality that was too inflated for the Leafs and its corporate body. The Leafs itself is the cash spewing brand. Ownership didn't need a blowhard GM trying to be the brand (and even after he was fired, Burke described himself as the 'brian burke brand'). As has been shown time and time again, the team on its own brings in the cash. MLSE doesn't want corporate celebrities. As far as Cherry goes, nothing he says adds to or detracts from the MLSE $ printing press.

He'll be doomed to failure...because no matter what MLSE, etc tell him, they'll never actually leave him alone to do that.

Don't question him. Big Tuna only posts "facts". Ipso facto , anything he says is obviously truth.

Tim Lieweke is the definition of corporate celebrity and they gave him the keys to everything.

What are you talking about? Pretty much every big name goes to Toronto after their contracts are up. Babcock and Stamkos are going to be next on that list. They even got the mighty David Clarkson!

Stamkos will sign in Tampa but Babcock has a great chance of ending up with the Leafs.

Right, because none of that had to do with the Detroit media themselves trying to manufacture a story. They never do that. Nope, Darth Babcock pulled a Sith mind trick on them and FORCED them to ask that question.

Right, because people who are negotiating contracts always accept the first offer. Nobody has ever been in a situation where negotiations stalled or got difficult, or where one side or the other chose to put the matter off.

Right, because this season isn't actually going to happen. The calendar is just going to skip forward to next spring, so that nothing has a chance to change in the meantime.

Seriously — is this the best you've got?
