Bridge deals for RFAs are piling up, probably because these players had hoped to use a deal between Johansen and the Blue Jackets to leverage a bigger contract out of their own clubs. It seems from the activity over the past week or so that the general feeling is that Johansen will need to take substantially less than his current proposal. This is not very good news for the Johansen camp.

Going by Capgeek and a little math, these deals keep the Bruins cap compliant with about $400k left of LTIR relief with 12 forwards 8 d-men 2 goalies once Marc Savard goes on LTIR.

This is delaying the inevitable, but does buy them time to make a deal for one of their more expensive players.

Really depends on how much the cap increases next year.
The Bruins are operating this season with close to $5 million in bonus overages from last season counting towards their cap this season. Combine that coming off with say a $2 million salary cap increase for next season, and they are sitting comfortably cap wise without necessarily making any cap dump deals.

Are you concluding that Edmonton is no good?

This is certainly an indicator that gms are not going to be throwing out 6x6's all over. Johansen should be lowering his demands here

And no one (outside of Edmonton) would say that Schultz was better last year.

Curious, but do these contracts include any bonuses they are pushing off on to next years cap?
Seems like really great deals for both kids.

Believe so. I saw $900,000 salary, $500,000 bonus.

can't include any performance bonuses on these contracts. signing bonuses can't be pushed
performance bonuses can only be added to ELCs and 35+ year old contracts or if a player missed significant time due to injury
they both were probably promised some rich deals on their next contracts which they can sign in January

Thanks sureLoss, makes sense. Good news for Boston, I wasn't sure how they would get this one done.
So really no point in them trading a D man now? Or does the log jam still need to be relieved?

These signings now don't necessitate them to trade a D man for cap space.
The still probably trade one of them for better depth on the wings and/or a bit more flexibility in cap space.

All it takes is a non-LTIR eligible injury and the Bruins won't be able to call anyone up to replace the injured player(s). They would be playing with fire in not making a move to free up some space.

400K in cap space with a 22 man roster, that's tight ... Sutter tight.

Yea, the obvious difference being is that the Flames were tight to the cap after the trade deadline and then incurred a bunch of injuries. The Bruins are going to make a move or two in the next couple week, imo.

To clarify, Boston got both these kids - a defenceman better than Schultz and a top 6 forward - for less than the Coilers spent on Schultz alone. They really are no good.
