I also want to point out that all of these punishments are at the commissioner's discretion. He may choose to do nothing if he so wishes.# All in all there are eight possible penalties prescribed, but I'm only going to include the ones that would fit in this situation:
Impose a fine of up to $5 million in the case of a Circumvention by a Club or Club Actor, but in no circumstances shall such fine be less than $1 million against any Club or Club Actor if such party is found to have violated Article 50 of this Agreement. (A "Club Actor" is any member of the club, but most likely the GM)
Direct a Club to forfeit draft picks (the number, placement, and League Year of which shall be determined in the Commissioner's sole discretion)
Declare a forfeiture of any NHL Game(s) determined to have been affected by a Circumvention
Suspend any Club employee, Player, or Certified Agent involved in such a violation for a period of time determined in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, the System Arbitrator, or the NHLPA, respectively

It seems like an anti-tanking measure. I wonder if the Flames brass could get Bettman's blessing to go under the salary cap in an effort to make the team better.
Hard to sit 10 million dollars in the pressbox; that's for sure.
One good thing about Wideman, at least we know Smido will be back there to cover his ass defensively in the regular season.
Anyone else notice Billy Arnold was 91% on the dot tonight? Him and Corban will have to fight it out in my head as to who I think should anchor the forth line/PK in a couple years time.
Yeah, Arnold was great in the faceoffs and he was also a +- 0 which was only matched by some vets. Diaz was a -3, so he didn't do himself any favours. Diaz has some offensive skill but that isn't what we are lacking on defence.
I hope Jones and Setoguchi aren't guaranteed roster spots on this team.
We kind of expect that Jones will be a nonfactor but Setoguchi was kind of a disappointment as I barely noticed him. That said it's just preseason and nothing to get overly excited about.
Bennett really was the best player on the ice. Pretty excited about his potential as he looks like he's going to be a good one.
Baertschi, Bennett, and Agostino all stood out for me.
David Jones and Wideman were both hot garbage. If management sticks to their word neither player should make the starting roster, but I'm sure they both will regardless of their play sadly.
Every single shift he was noticeable. IMO, the best forward for either team tonight. And that's after one day of camp and coming off a groin injury. Insane.
I still don't think he should make the team, but now I can see that it is at least up for debate.
Also, TJ Brodie has looked even better so far this year than he did last year - I think he is going to have a huge season.
Agree with others that Agostino and Ferland also looked pretty good. And Hathaway continues to impress.
On the other side - didn't even know Horvat was playing until they mentioned it in the post game show.
Preseason is not a good time to judge vets. It's where they expend less energy than kids for two very good reasons.
1) They aren't as invested as to them this is practice, to the bubble players is their chance to make the show
2) The regular season is 82 gruelling games long. Players lose weight as the season progresses, get dinged up, etc when playing hard. Why lose what you may need come February, March and April? The preseason is practice

Not to be repetitive. But was at the game and here are my thoughts.
Overall we were the better team. Score definitely was not indicative. Their first two goals were cheesy.
Brodie/Gio were by far the best players on the ice. Hit the freakin net tho Gio. He knows it. Little rusty but honestly they were men among boys out there.
Monahan looked fantastic barring two bone headed giveaways. Literally tape to tape passes to a Canuck player, one of which led to a goal I believe. Looks poised, smarter, stronger. Was worried about sophomore slump but can't see it.
Agostino continues to look good IMO. Simple straight line player with upside could slot in well as 3rd line winger if he pans out.
Ferland made a few nice plays, doesn't look out of place, but nothing too notable.
Cundari is a great skater and decently good IQ but overpowered in d zone and occasional brain farts. I actually like him but don't think there's room given other undersized mobile d-men who are better.
Wideman is a bit of a clown...for example falling to his knees for no reason and then making a great play to recover. Can't really figure him out tbh. Seems to always recover somehow but awkward as hell haha.
Sven, made some incredible passes that weren't capitalized on. Like grade A scoring chances. I really think he has great playmaking ability. Noticeably stronger, finishing his checks and back checking harder. But then there were long stretches when I didn't even notice him...I thought he was hurt and not playing at one point. Wouldn't be surprised if he started on the big club. Seems to be trying harder.
Bennett honestly, he outperformed my expectations. He was noticeable almost every time on the ice. He got an ovation at one point after a particularly good shift. He's fast, relentless, has moves, takes the puck to the net and has a great shot. Needs to bulk up and be a bit smarter with puck in neutral zone/d-zone.
Culkin didn't look out of place.
Diaz has flashes but makes me think of MA Bergeron. Has skill but undersized and one-dimensional.
Hiller looked fine. Didn't face too many shots and the goals he let in were kind of weird. Do didn't read too much into the game for him. The Canucks had 4 shots in the first period he must have been bored as hell.
Arnold, didn't notice him too much to the positive. Had a few plays that I noticed he looked out of the flow. But I personally really like him and have hopes for him to be our future 3rd line C. Clearly needs to spend time in Addy.
The vets, Bouma had a decent game, guy is consistent. Missed his penalty shot early tho. Stajan, I don't even remember him touching the puck. Seto noticed him back checking hard a few times...that's about it. Bollig not much to say.
Overall we were the better team and were pretty snakebit. Would like to see more physicality but that'll probably come in reg season. Disappointed nobody taught Corrado a lesson.
EDIT: Apparently I had a few dome foams tonight because this post is ridiculously long, apologies, I am so pumped about the team this year!

Bennett was awesome - even though the Flames lost it was worth going to the game just to watch him. He made something happen just about every time he was on the ice.
Also thought Ferland was very good. He isn't afraid to play a gritty game and showed some skill as well. Monahan looked good. Gio and Brodie were both great as well, even if their timing was a little off. Even with all the SOG the Flames had tonight it often seemed like they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. At least they're not afraid to shoot.
Diaz wasn't great. I was definitely expecting more from him. Wideman was freaking dreadful. Jones and Setoguchi were both pretty brutal, which was disappointing. A lot of people seem to be high on Sven's play but honestly I thought he looked disengaged at times and was still too soft on the puck. The whole team looked pretty disjointed at times - they came out strong in the first period but faded in the 2nd, and the 3rd was kind of like a Chinese fire drill.
Hiller wasn't exactly lights-out tonight either. He seems to have a lot of trouble with sharp-angled shots.

I loved when Bennet walked through the canucks D, got a shot off, and bowled right into Eddie Lack. Just thought "yep that's Sam Bennet's game right there." 1st star of his first appearance in the saddledome is a great debut.
Ferland could definitely take over Jones spot in the line-up and it wouldn't be a step down. Keep Jones on the roster but in the press box so his cap hit still counts. So far Setoguchi doesn't deserve a spot over one of the many good prospects.
Sven wasn't perfect but he also didn't look out of place on the roster.
Bennett was outstanding and it will be interesting to watch him against a more experienced teams in the pre-season. I still worry the Flames would be rushing him to keep him up for the season.

Jk...glad to hear he was playing well. Hopefully he'll get in a few more preseason games and maybe a couple regular season games as well. It would be nice to see how he stacks up against the other team's best players.
