Default Flames 1 v. Divers 3

Thought Sven and Bennett looked really good tonight.

I remain unimpressed by Diaz, he just doesn't make quick enough decisions.

Thought the Arnold / Agostino / Ferland line also had some good moments.

Baertschi, Bennett, and Agostino all stood out for me.

David Jones and Wideman were both hot garbage. If management sticks to their word neither player should make the starting roster, but I'm sure they both will regardless of their play sadly.

The Flames have some very tough decisions to make.

Baertschi, Gaudreau, Granlund, Bennett all make a case.

I wish they were both gone too... but can we actually make the cap floor with both of them gone? :O

Hard to sit 10 million dollars in the pressbox; that's for sure.
One good thing about Wideman, at least we know Smido will be back there to cover his ass defensively in the regular season.

Anyone else notice Billy Arnold was 91% on the dot tonight? Him and Corban will have to fight it out in my head as to who I think should anchor the forth line/PK in a couple years time.

Nope. Between the two, it's almost 10 million. We're already very close to the line.

Ditch Jones. Now that cap floor isn't an issue, move this bum for anything. ANYTHING.
Setoguchi looks like he should be in the AHL.

Sat behind a Vancouver fan at the game. Typical Vancouver fan. Whining to everyone around him. Oh and the way he'd throw is hands up with a dumb confused look on his face whenever a Canucks player got bumped into. "Where's the call?" This guy made Canadiens fans seem level headed, as far as whining goes. Just wouldn't stop. Only felt a little bad when my kid dumped his sprite on him:P

And was it just me or was diving pretty out of control? That or Canucks sure seem to go down hard on any little bump.

Just an opinion but Baertschi, Gaudreau and Bennett will be a lot better long term with more seasoning.
The Flames are not a playoff team with any of them sticking.

Long term they will be better off with more time in the minors/ junior.

Bennett, with an additional 20 lbs... will be... a killer . He looks like something absolutely special. I can't see him getting more than 9 this year, if that.

I think Sven looks polished. I don't know if he would merit much from spending another year in the AHL. Johnny Hockey looks like his game will translate to the NHL absolutely fine; the good part about it, is if in 10-20 games, it doesn't look like he's transitioned to the game physically; then he can always spend some time in the AHL.

I was at the game so I had a couple thoughts on a few players.

Baertschi: won some puck battles in the first, stronger than last year.

Diaz: Small, not great decision making, loses a lot of puck battles.

Gio + Brodie: Best players on the ice for either team.

Bennett: Most dangerous forward in the game, lots of skill, tenacity and is everything fans hoped he would be. He is a little thin and I can see his body not holding up in the NHL the whole year. Skill wise he could be NHL ready but his body I don't think is.

Ferland: A lot more skill than I thought, good passes and offensive instincts. Finished checks and played with an edge. He had some chemistry with Bennett which is something to maybe keep an eye on next year.

Monahan: He scored a nice goal. He is in the right spots but he's still too passive. He doesn't drive the play, he needs someone like that on a line with him. He handles himself in the corners better and I'm not sure his percentage on the dot but he battled hard and didn't look outmatched.

Hiller: To me his lateral movement was a little slow and he was fighting the puck tonight. He played the puck decently, he's no Brodeur but he's not MAF either (World Jrs.).

I think some of the vets deserve a break as they have not been seasoned enough. I have always been hard on Glencross and saw no issue in his game yesterday as it just seemed to be some timing.
Gio tonight couldnt hit the net if his life depended on it and again.... first game action so no concerns.
I think Sven is making a strong case to stay up, we need Johny to run our pp as he just seems to create unthinkable plays, Monahan looks big and has the know how to be in the right place at the right time, Bennet showed no reason to think he cant stay with the club. I love Ferlands game. He simply is not scared of going into any situation and has much better hands than I thought!
Jones and Bollig struggled tonight while Diaz wasnt great but still a solid 6th imo.

Johny, Bennet, Sven, Money, Hudler are so fun to watch alone...what it will be like with several of them in the lineup is worth the price of admission regardless of the outcome.

I had to look at my lineup card at least 5 times to look up who #19 was. And every time it was "oh right, it's Jones". That's not good.

Ferland, Baertschi, Agostino, Brodie all had solid showings.

.....Bennett was outstanding.

Cundari, Setoguchi, and Jones were bad.

Bennett looked good. Wasn't intimidated at all -- generated some good chances. Was hoping he'd pot one but that will come soon enough.

Baertschi looks like a different player. Much more confident; much stronger on the puck. Hope he can find some chemistry offensively because that is what will make the difference now.

Not sold on Hiller. Maybe it's because we've seen some dynamic goalies in Kipper and more recently Ramo and Ortio, but it looks like he's just trying to block the puck by making himself big. Maybe that will work in the long run but I was unimpressed today.

When I saw Jones #19 I kept wondering, didn't we get rid of Blair Jones? How is that guy still on this team. Needless to say, now that I know it was David Jones, my opinion hasn't changed

Bennett looked amazing. Baertschi also looked good which I'm glad to see.

“@AAVickers: Bennett finished with an assist and two hits in 15:58 of ice time, including the PP and PK. He also had a game-high seven shots. #Flames”

“@AAVickers: Bennett: "The boys were really supporting me and giving me advice. Definitely I felt pretty confident out there.””

“@AAVickers: Bennett (cont): “I was shooting the puck a lot. I wanted to put one in but I think if I just keep shooting, eventually it’s got to go in.””

“@AAVickers: Bennett (cont): “I just can’t wait to play again. I’m so excited.””

“@AAVickers: Coach Bob Hartley was plenty complimentary to Sam Bennett after the game: "“Tonight it’s very simple...he was our best forward." #Flames”

“@AAVickers: Hartley: "He was exciting. He was on the puck. He was creating lots of chances. It’s only a first game but it’s quite a good impression.””
