Who in a busy place is going to want to broadcast a facetime chat with their friends or partners or worse yet at work be broadcasting chats with your wife or new girlfriend? I simply don't see how a phone the size of a tube of lipstick is going to be useful in any way as the projector angle simply doesn't work. IMO the only real area they can go is with folding screens to which the overall phone size is smaller but the screen folded out is more inline with a 5"+ screen. Until we get to the point that we can tap into our brains I simply don't see anything significant on the horizon as it's going to be medium to large size phones for the coming years. There will be improvements to keyboards and voice commands but right now what you see is what we are going to get outside of better screens and batteries.
I think you may need to be a bit more imaginative here. I'm not talking about projecting your screen onto the side of a bus to read a text message. Your little lipstick-sized phone could pop open a little frame the size of a Note into which a display is projected or something. Or maybe the screen will just roll open, who knows.

Mark my words, phones will become smaller, but with still-large displays. There's no doubt about it.

There are two big things keeping phone sizes big right now and that's batteries and non-flexible displays. The boards to keep the phone itself running have gotten really really darn small.

If battery technology got a lot better, or we got much more power efficient and displays could be rolled... there is not reason we won't see a extendable, foldable phones in the future. A scroll phone as it were.

Flexible displays sound great in theory, I just worry about how they'd hold up over time. It's like that piece of paper you fold and unfold over and over again until the two sides simply detach. If they can overcome this it'd be sweet, personally though, I think the longer term tech would likely be glasses based as it can give you the best of both worlds, small device and large display. Being able to check texts etc without having to pull a device out of your pocket is pretty sweet.

Yeah I simply don't think we are close to commercially viable flexible screens at least for the rest of the decade. I have no doubt there will be in the future but I don't see the phone landscape changing a lot for the next little while outside of smaller innovations like the Note Edge screen.

100% true incident: Today, a friend was bragging about having Google Maps on her iPhone. She was smirking when she asked if I had it on my "Android phone" (her words). At least she was contrite when I explained things to her.

She also said that she wants to get a 6+ because Whoopi has one and said that it doesn't bend.

Now it's gapgate for the Note 4.

Gotta love their response

"The reported issue does not impact the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4," an official Samsung spokesperson told us. "We assure our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality control standards."

In other words, the gap is supposed to be there. Not sure what the issue is.

lol how do you screw that up?? I would be very unhappy if my phone had a gap like that. Amazing that these huge companies fail at these little thing sometimes.

Not piling on Samsung but their phones are known for their high tech not quality as they have always cut corners to keep prices below Apple. I wouldn't call a business card sized gap a big deal if its uniform around the unit but I could see a lot of dirt buildup over time in the gap which is the only real issue.

Yeah I liked my Nexus 4, but that kind of gap was around the screen as well, not as thick as a business card, but that made it even worse to keep clean. My biggest complaint about the phone.

Man, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact was supposed to come to Canada before the end of September (according to the rumor mill). So bummed that didn't happen. Might have to suck it up and go buy the S5.

Are you still happy with going back to Apple after having an Android, Photon? I'm not sure if I could do it...

Yeah items like phones, mice, or controllers that are in contacts in hands really need tight gaps or it's pretty gross the crud that builds up from dirt and oils from your hands. Ever taken a business card along the mating seams of an Xbox 360 controller and see how much crud comes out? Nasty.

Yup happy with it. I can certainly see how some might not like it, the notifications just aren't as good as in Android still. And I do miss being able to customize the screens beyond a grid of icons, but in reality I hardly ever used that feature anyway. And I think I've resigned myself that I'm going to have to write my own audiobook player.

EDIT: Re device grossness, for sure. The scroll wheel on my mouse gets constant cleaning, I like the logitech ones that have the little ridges, but they're a pita to keep clean.

Never really considered a Sony phone but I like the look of that. I like that they are pimping media features such as hi-res audio. I feel like too many smartphones have glossed over the fact that these are our primary music players now.

It also has front facing speakers, which are the only set up that make sense to me. Waterproof is awesome as I spend most of my summers at a lake. MicroSD expandable. 3 gigs of ram. I honestly can't think of a cooler phone right now. And 2 days of battery life!!
