Most impressive players to me were Colborne, Granlund and Reinhart. Best three players on the ice. Gaudreau was really good, but looked a little off. Not sure if he's breaking in new equipment, but he looks a little off, especially on his skates. Baertschi was good, but had an inconsistent game. Okay first, great second, but disappeared in the third. Was hoping for more. One last guy that impressed was Elson. Reminded me of a young Richard Kromm. I like guys like that and hope he gets a cup of coffee this season.

Agreed, I think he'll have a career. I just suspect it won't be in Calgary. He's a guy I could see packaged in a trade before long.

Defence:
Engelland-better than anticipated again, mobile, very calm, poised presence, physical, gets shots on net, scored, makes the simple, safe play
Russell-picked up where he left off last year

Kulak-very impressive again, good vision, his offensive game has lots of potential but he will benefit from gaining experience with lots of ice time in AHL
Diaz-great poise, puck control, good puck movement on the pp, shots get on net but not very powerful, plays with heart but struggled a bit with bigger forwards, lots of talent but can see why he hasn't stuck as a top 6 dman with a team.
Brookbank-great defensive plays again, simple, doesn't make mistakes, basically what you want in a 7th dman
Sieloff-physical, mobile, as advertised. Getting a full AHL season will be helpful.

Forwards:
Colborne-looked solid, confident, controlling the puck well, winning board battles, hugely improved from last year. A stronger possession player this year.
Glencross-generally looked disinterested, but still good hands, game-winner tip-in
McGrattan-scored!

Granlund-most NHL ready of the rookie forwards. Smart plays on the boards, creates offence, can play with anyone. He'll stick around to the end of camp and I wouldn't be surprised if he started the season in the NHL with Backlund injured.
Gaudreau-puck continues to follow him around, controls the puck very well, quarterbacks the pp, getting the puck to the net lots, lots of shots, creating scoring chances, doesn't look as deadly as usual at this level yet, but the skill is obviously there
Ferland-soft hands, good stick handling in traffic, started strong but disappeared for stretches, consistency might be issue
Baertschi-his best pre-season game so far. Scored a goal, looked more poised with the puck, stronger, and even threw a couple hits. I still expect more from him, would like to see more speed, and he'll have to create more offensive chances if he wants to make the team. Some AHL time to build offensive confidence may be needed for him to reach his offensive potential as a top 6 forward.
Reinhart-smart plays, good pk, doing the little things right, will have to beat Byron out for an NHL spot
Elson-lots of jump in his game, played very well in his role, good on pk, ultimately destined for AHL to gain size/experience, but definite progression on a prospect that was an afterthought last year. A character guy doing all he can to stick around and making a case that he can be an NHL player down the line.
Jooris-playing hard, simple, but AHL skill
Wolf-threw a few hits, but not a difference-maker. Not helping his cause to make the roster.
Klimchuk-plays hard, left game early with injury, likely will be going back to junior shortly

Goalie:
Ortio-poor rebound control on two shots led to two goals, otherwise fine
Carr-calm and composed, not tested much but played looks like a good AHL/ECHL depth option to get under contract
Great write up and agree with most of it.

Was not that impressed with Brookbank - took a holding penalty because of foot speed and was beaten on - I think - coyotes first goal.

If Granlund doesn't make the team I think that will be a major blow to the Flames. Prospects will think they have no chance because there is no way from the way he has played you could deny Granlund a spot in the NHL.

I dunno about Engelland. I counted three terrible giveaways and ended up overloading the wrong side twice getting puck focused. Strange how two people can see different things. I wasn't impressed

I like Diaz because of what he does offensively. Loves to unload bombs from the point and consistently hits the net. Also wasn't terrible in other areas of the ice. He deserves that contract if he keeps this up.

Sven is very inconsistent. When he's on his game he uses his skills and awareness effectively, and is a lot of fun to watch. When he's not he seems to just let the play pass him by without doing much at all. Johnny on the other hand is very consistent. That's what I love most about his game. Every single time the puck gets on his stick, or anywhere near him, you know something will happen offensively. He had a couple of amateurish looking plays and botched passes tonight but on the whole was a positive impact for the team. The consistency is why I still think Johnny gets on the roster ahead of Sven. You can't teach consistency, it's all between the players ears.

I thought the same too. He was kept to the perimeter for much of the night and got knocked off the puck quite easily. I saw a couple turnovers resulting from that. I get the sense that he's going to quickly learn to dish the puck away when someone's coming at him, which isn't necessarily a bad thing as he's got the skills to connect with others. But you can tell he's going to have to adapt to the NHL level. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him start in the AHL.

When he came rushing down the wing, in College he would have tried to dangle though the defenders legs or pull some crazy move. It looks like he realizes moves like that simply aren't going to work on NHL defenders. At least not yet...

It also looks like Tippett is preaching early on his style of stifling boring defence. As much as I think he's a top 5 coach, I really can't wait for him to get fired from the Coyotes staff so we don't have to endure his Sutter-like game style.

And I thought Granlund was the best foward on both teams. Strong on the puck, good shot, and great hockey sense. I'd love for him to make the team out of camp.

I would love that TBH, unfortunately I don't think Darryl is a GM any more. Those trades are difficult to make because only a bad GM trades away quality for quantity. Would be nice though.

I think everyone is being kind of harsh on baertschi once again. I assume the rest of you watched the game as closely as I did and he consistently promoted puck possession and was solid in his own zone. Plays died on other guys' sticks after he made lots of great lays to keep the puck alive. He wasn't making soft plays at the blueline and he wasn't turning the puck over. He finished his checks every time and hit with a lot more authority... Even knocking guys down. He scored the tying goal for crying out loud! I agree that gaudreau and Reinhart looked better in this game but Sven played great.

I don't think expecting some consistency is being harsh. He really did have an up and down game, and for a player hoping to crack the lineup he can't afford to be wildly inconsistent in three periods. You want to see guys that are ready, look at Granlund and Reinhart. Extremely consistent, giving the coach a performance he can count on, as that what a coach is looking for; a performance that is going to be there almost every time the coach calls the name. Baertschi has improved in certain aspects of his game, but he does not yet appear to have that level of consistency in his performance that can be counted on to the same level of some of the other prospects.

So I didn't end up turning the game off and i've been watching SportsNets garbage highlight show and the guy commentating over the highlights just said

"And the Shames.. oops I mean the Flames will be back in action tomorrow."

How do people like this get jobs on TV?

Just finished watching the game.

Baertschi looks like a different player. Didn't play scared at all and made good decisions with the puck all night. Played deep in his own end frequently as well.

Also liked Kulak, Granlund, Glencross, Engelland and Gaudreau.

I don't know what some of you are expecting out of Glencross....he played fine tonight and looked plenty interested, didn't think he was "floating" at all.

Just staring at him waiting for his legs to stop moving or the wrong look on his face I suspect.

Pretty sure he wouldn't be wearing an A if the coaches and teammates actually thought he was floating, uncaring, disinterested.

Colborne had a great game! Looked nice and mean and played well.

Great event for Sylvan Lake! Love the bolstering and support of the smaller communities.
