My 4 year old nephew calls one of his Grandma's "Beige Grandma" and the other "Brown Grandma". Is he a racist?

I am pretty sure that every four-year-old is "racist" in the same sense that your nephew is. But I believe the more important issue here is why you think we should be taking our social cues from four-years-olds. Do you honestly see no difference between his formative behaviour and the caption that was published in a mass market medium by a grown adult?

Holy crap, people are dropping like flies! Is anyone going to be healthy to start the season?

If he's still using the same words at 20, then yes.
In other words your average racist is about as smart and eloquent as a 4 year old.

It is not your place to inform anyone about how sensitive or "politically correct" they ought or ought not be. Glossed over in this is the reality that there are MANY people who ARE sensitive to this issue—enough so that that in itself warrants a high level of attention to the language that we use and how we use it.

So when I turn on SportsCenter tonight and see Jennifer Hedger and Brian Mudryk, would it be incorrect to describe Hedger as a woman? I am calling her a woman based on her visible features?
You are trying to create something out of nothing. Get over it.

Why is he racist? He noticed that one of his Grandma's is brown and the other is beige and that is how he differentiates them when he is referring to them.
If you think that's where I get me social cues from, you are exactly right. I love the fact that a 4 year old can call someone brown and no one cares. I love the fact that one of his parents is black and one is white too. My point is simply the response from others, such as yourself, is what makes these kinds of statements an issue. Kids aren't born racist, but they aren't blind either.
Intention is everything.
edit: I should clarify I believe the person who wrote the comment in the picture needs a lesson in political correctness, but I am not calling them out as a racist *quite* yet.

wow, didn't think that racism would take over this thread.....This all started from the comment made in the sun, can we move on from this topic and talk about anything else related to training camp? Heck, I'd rather talk about some peoples pools and how the injuries will affect them.
I think a few of these injuries will help my pool as I can snag some of them in later rounds.....

I think this thread now belongs in the "What is racist and/or sexist?" sub-forum.

I'm more taken back that a 4-yearold described anything as beige - perhaps the most mind numbingly boring of colors. How has this poor boy unearthed such an uninspiring color so early in his life; managing to work it into his active vocabulary? Hopefully this isn't the start of a gradual slide that results in his wearing pleated dockers, suspenders and knit sweaters by the age of 8.

Detroit is going to fade fast, their big three forwards in Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and especially Franson are so injury prone now. The Wings realy should have dumped at least 2 of those 3 a couple of seasons ago for some youth. Add in Alfredsson who is also broken down and old and you have a team spiraling toward mediocrity. Nyquist is a beaut but after that, yikes!

Yeah I agree. I think the only thing wrong with that caption is that this crapfest is the inevitable result.
Then again, I'm an English-speaking white male, so what do I know.

Technically correct, but utterly unrelated to her ability to do her job. Do your coworkers call you "White Man TurekFan"? Do you introduce yourself as "TurekFan the White Man"?
The only time it's appropriate to refer to somebody by solely by their gender, or because of their gender, is when you're discussing gender. Similarly you can refer to a person's race when you're discussing race -- but then again why are you discussing race? You feel you actually have a point to add that hasn't been already covered these last 200 years?
Point is there's no reason to do it at all, and it's a sign of ignorance, immaturity, or worse.
