You are absolutely being a hypocrite, how can you complain about sexism regarding the thread but then become indifferent when it comes to our avatars? Your oily Regehr is exactly that, it objectifies men and it along with any other inappropriate avatars, should be deleted immediately.

The conversation was about the language used in the thread, not the pictures themselves. The complaint was about the language being used around the site, not the pictures. I don't believe EG ever complained about the pictures themselves, it was ONLY EVER about the language.

Very true, you clearly dig the dudes, hence the avatar.
I'd say that I'm disappointed that I dont look like Regehr in that photo, but I'm not an idiot, I'll never look like Regehr in that photo....damned oil allergy!

I put the avatar up in the first place because any time I posted a picture of a man on the board, I got such a thresher of moral outrage from the guys on the site that are now defending the girly thread being taken down. It seemed unfair that I should not be able to post the same kinds of pictures that all you guys get to post without recourse. I received a couple of comments/PMs complaining about it. I guess we are all hypocrites.
I didn't flock to the theatre to see Magic Mike. I thought it looked dumb. I did however see it on DVD, without having pre-ordered it from Amazon months in advance while marking the release date on my calendar with red lipstick. I just walked in to Wal-mart, all casual-like, saw it and thought, "why not?"
|
This is hilarious BTW.

But what was funny about that movie was that it was about male strippers, but the most you saw with a bit of ass crack, but there was still a fair bit of T&A/female nudity.
I don't think anyone should have to take down their avatars, male or female. I don't really care about them. If the mods decide it, then let it be so.
Not sure what else I can say? There are too many "what ifs" being posted that I can't keep up. Frankly, some of them I am really not sure how to respond. It's good from a discussion stand point. We can talk about everything and find what is right for the community as a whole.

Theres a joke to be made here about something but perhaps this isnt the time or place to make it.

It's telling of what? What does it tell you that I mentioned not wanting the forum to be monotonous?
I will take it down when all the boob/ass avatars are taken down, should the mods decide to do so.

I think you are missing the point. An insult is an insult. You are micromanaging the insult of calling a man a sister. Maybe it is derogatory to women but the fact of the matter is that calling the Sedins "sisters' was intended to be derogatory to them in the first place. I think your argument here is that the Sedins should embrace being called sisters because there is nothing wrong with that. Really that's what your argument saying because we are equal then why should the Sedins care? I'm willing to bet even if they are evolved as you are they still don't like it.

And I don't think it's hypocritical as a lot of other 'sexy' avatars are still up. The thread might be gone, but the avatars aren't. If they came down too than maybe you'd have a point (if only literally, you'd still be missing the point in spirit).

the point in spirit?
I don't believe I'm being petty, I'm just looking for equality. She along with everyone else have been able to express their opinion on the matter of objectifying pictures and rightly so but then how come it can be related to an entire thread, where people had the choice to visit but it isn't the same issue for an avatar that can be seen any where on the forum?

Ummm...in case it hasn't already been mentioned (or in case you didn't know of the option), you can set your preferences to block all avatars so that they never show up on your screen.
It is what I do, and it makes for a much more pleasant viewing environment (less distractions, cleaner look, easier to read posts, etc) in my view.

Untrue. A couple posters even did a forensic Melnyk style review of the thread and found the number of misogynistic comments in ylyl to be so minimal they'd be considered statistically irrelevant.
The main complaint was objectifying of women. Which on some level had a very grotesque slut shaming undertone. If a consenting adult woman wants to model and show off her physique which I'm sure she's worked very hard to maintain, and profit from this modeling there is absolutely nothing wrong with this and she should not be judged by so called feminists

I'm actually at the point where I'm wondering WTF you are talking about. Do you speak in English, or just in grunts?
I'm all for insulting the Sedins as much as possible. But calling them "sisters" is insulting women AND them. Can we not be a bit more creative, and a bit less, you know, historically patriarchal, and come up with something better?

If you're using it in a derogatory sense towards them, then you think being a woman or having feminine qualities is derogatory. It's not different than people who call things or people they don't like "gay," or speculate on someone's sexuality because of a certain way they behave. It's degrading and insinuates that there is something wrong or abnormal about being a part of one of those communities in contrast with being a heterosexual male.

Firefly already answered it above, but I meant the same thing.
Eastern Girl's concerns weren't at the pictures themselves, on the attitudes surrounding them. Therefore, focusing on her avatar is completely missing the point.
And, as I also mentioned, there are still also 'sexy' avatars on the board anyway. So you're missing the spirit of the point, and the literal point as well. You say your fighting for equal treatment, but you've missed it on the spirit and the literal.
And I'm not entirely against what your saying about censorship, or treating everyone equally, I think there are some points to explore there. But calling her a hypocrite is incorrect, factually, and in spirit, and doesn't serve any of the points you're trying to make.

Actually, you may not have noticed the parts of your post I bolded. The part where you admitted 'very grotesque slut shaming' and saying there was nothing wrong with it.
Um, there's a lot wrong with it.
And just because you have a recent join date, doesn't mean you're new.

Lately i had become a regular contributor to the thread and other then the occasional "wow" or "yes please" i honestly can't recall of any truly derogatory remarks that were posted in the YLYL thread. Now throughout the rest of CP, i cant make that same claim but i fail to see the relation between policing the entire forum to deleting the YLYL thread. Although i do support the practice of addressing the sexism issue as someone has already pointed out to the act if a female was reference in a post, then often is the case the question of "pic?" soon followed which was never necessary but in my opinion, i just see it all as a fool's errand to think one can truly effect change to a person hiding behind a keyboard on the internet.
Even our city's newspaper has a page dedicated to displaying a different female model each day and i don't believe that it takes any professionalism away from the establishment itself.

Well that'd be pretty much impossible to do since the Sun operates with zero professionalism to begin with.

Actually, that exact issue has been used many times to argue Sun Media's lack of professionalism (among other things).
There's a reason why the other papers don't do it, and why the Sun is considered a rag by many.
