My belief is that if it was still only a hockey rink it would have been announced, and ground likely would have been broken already.

A football stadium and hockey rink fairly close would be really cool.

If any of you have been to Seattle, I am a huge fan of how they have SafeCo field and Centurylink field pretty much across the street from each other!

No expert here either, I think it would all depend on who owns the land. By that I mean if they build in a whole new area where the land has not been sold to developers, the city may still own the land and could be part of the agreement with the organization that the land come free as part of the city's part?

This only works for new areas of course, is there any chance of putting it in the stampede grounds with new arena, stadium and "others"?

Have to admit I don't know many of the newer areas of the city where they could develop an entertainment district but think this is maybe what they are thinking?

The estimated cost of the arena portion for Edmonton's Rogers Place is $480 m. So, a little higher than costs for most new NHL arenas, but still realistically could project a hockey/football arena district costs still in the range of $0.7–1.0 b. for the Calgary market.

As with every project of this scope, that estimate will go up as the project nears completion. If it's anywhere near that, I'll be shocked

Land costs....you mean the price of land or the cost to service it? The price / acre for land in Calgary wouldn't be nearly as high as in some other major metropolitan areas (ie. Vancouver, Toronto, major US cities) but yes quite high when compared to Ottawa for example.

Skilled labour crunch is the biggest worry that companies have over the next 5 years, even with the influx of 'immigrants' from the rest of Canada. Low supply of available skilled labour + high demand for skilled labour = very high labour costs.

Even building material costs are higher here than in Eastern Canada....

So yes all in all you can expect a definite cost premium to build a large scale entertainment complex here.

They have said that they want the complex downtown, so definitely not in the "new areas" of the city. West side of downtown is looking like the most likely spot right now according to various sources.

Something like Globe City in Stockholm would be unbelievably great. Ericsson Globe for hockey, Tele2 arena for football, multiple other stadiums for sports/concerts (unlikely in Calgary), all built in a district with a mall and offices.

Eh, would go either way in my opinion if they were in the same building, could look very tacky. In my mind preferably it would be in the same area sharing bars and other such entertainment venues.

Philadelphia also has all of their sports teams within a block of each other. The old Spectrum was also there for awhile but I think it got the wrecking ball last year.

It's safe to say the new arena would be in the seating range of 18-20 thousand but I'm more interested in how large the football stadium will be. There seems to be a trend in the league for smaller stadiums but you would think the new stadium would seat close to McMahon at the very least. As long as it one-ups the Regina stadium so we don't have to hear Riders fans continually pat themselves on the back about being the best fans and having the best stadium.

I've never heard of it before, but that's one funky looking sports complex. Would be awesome if we could get something as unique as this.

For sure. But the point here is that even with high cost labour in Alberta, a project of the scale that King intimated is still with the range of $0.8–1.0 b., though more likely on the higher end.
