Backlund injury worse than previously thought. Hartley worried
Kristen Odland @KristenOdlandCH
Sounds like #Flames C Mikael Backlund’s injury (ab strain) is worse than originally thought. “I’m worried,” said head coach Bob Hartley #NHL

I would definitely add Reinhart into the mix also, maybe Knight.
Hopefully Backlund heals up soon.

Man Backs has had some bad luck...I was really looking forward to him building off of last year and having a fantastic year this year.

That really sucks to hear but it opens up a spot for us to evaluate a young guy.
I hope Backlund gets back soon. We need him.

I think it opens the door for one of the young wingers as Colborne may move back to Center.

Poor Backlund!
This blows.
I hope he recovers quickly.
I guess Grandlund/Reinhart/Bennett will start the season with the Flames.

Brutal news considering he really established himself as an important part of the young core last season and everyone is excited to see him build off of that.
Still a little more than 2 weeks until the season starts though, so at least that buys him some time.
This is a huge opportunity for Reinhart, Granlund or Knight though. I am looking forward to seeing who steps up.

That's possibly why Colborne has moved back to center. I wouldn't be surprised if Granlund started the year in Calgary.

This guy seriously cannot catch a break. I've been waiting for him to break out for almost 4 years now, and right when I think he's about to he gets injured.
Frustrating.

Wonder if it is an abdominal tear that potentially needs surgery?
Sucks for Backlund, was primed to take another step this year IMO.

This sucks big time but lets try to see the positives. We know Backlund is a stud in the making, the guy is going to come back and be as good as ever when the time is right and there are Lowe expectations for this year so he can take his time and heal up properly. This will give us some extra time to give to a prospect who is on the cusp of making it. If anything, this will lower our expectations a little more and take any pressure off of any younger kids while adding a chance to prove they belong. I just hope this doesn't turn into a nagging injury that hampers him for the rest of his career.

Shouldn't plague him, abdominal wall injuries should be easier to heal than joint, ligament, tendon, nerve or brain damage so I'm optimistic. Hartley's probably worried that Backlund won't start the season, not that he'll never be the same.

No. Backlund needs to be replaced with another 'lund'.
My vote is for Markus.

I wonder if this goes back to what the Fan was talking about this morning. That teams are really unhappy with the off season training programs that the players are using because too many players are coming into camp injured because the training does more harm then good.
I would expect in the next CBA that the NHL clubs will push for team mandated camps or fitness camps over the summer.
A player coming into camp with an abdominal strain or tear that is a possible long term injury is a problem.
