I mean if thats how it all shakes down that leaves:
Glencross
Bollig
Colborne
as the NHL Vets with Gaudreau, Sven, Wolf and Granlund as the forwards vying for a roster spot.
I get the Feeling D.Jones won't be around come puck drop on opening day. Unless he outplays Setoguchi. Which I don't see as likely.
With the C depth pretty much set with Monahan, Backlund, Stajan, Bouma. Bennett is going to be hard pressed to make this roster.
I think he pretty much has to unseat Stajan to earn a spot.

Bennett could also start his pro career on the left wing but I expect he'll be back in Kingston.

Hey, if he can walk in and unseat and jump ahead of the other high profile prospects that's awesome. That'll be more than I expected.

Yep, there's at least one too many vet wingers if we're going to bring in some kids and have them get ice time. Who's the odd man out? Would have to think Jones is potentially on the block if he doesn't perform the next few weeks.

I'd love to see a Kid Line of Bennett (or Granlund is he isn't ready) centering Gaudreau and Ferland. It's been a long time since Fleury and Ranheim.

I would say there's a 50/50 chance one of the vet's will be injured or day-to-day before the end of pre-season (not that I'm wishing on it, just typically happens). That may open up a spot or two if someone earns healthy scratches.

Jones is overpaid but he is not a bad player by any stretch. If he can stay healthy I see him as a useful veteran presence on a wing where we have very little depth.
I don't see why we'd move him as he's not worth much given his salary and that he's one of the few NHL-proven RWers in the organization.

Would we even make the salary floor without him?

First cuts being made:
Quote:
Calgary Flames @NHLFlames 10m
The #Flames have released forward Pavel Padakin. He will return to the @WHLHitmen ~ http://cflam.es/1u7OWSn
|
I hoped he would have stuck with them a little longer. The problem with him returning to the Hitmen is he is one of five overagers (allowed 3) and is now one of three import players (allowed 2). He will likely end up traded or perhaps cut from the Hitmen as well.

I just looked on Capgeek. If we buried him in the minors we would be fine as 3.075Million would still count on the cap, but if we traded him for non-roster players or if he was picked up on waivers we would need Wotherspoon to be on the roster, or have some other player with a cap hit of at least 800,000 to reach the cap floor as our 7th D.

Roger Millions@RogMillions35s
It looks at least two weeks for Mikael Backlund with an abdominal injury. Why not wait for regular season? #Flames

Markus Granlund's chances likely just went up.

I wish Bennett the best, but I really hope Reinhart/Granlund/Knight take advantage of this.

Yeah, I rather give the spot to an older prospect.

That's what they signed him for. He was a huge P.O.S for the Milwaukee Admirals. I'd say he's a healthier, meaner, equally as tenacious Carter Bancks. Glad he'll be on our side this year.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone giving updates.
It's awesome to read the progression of the prospects since Penticton and how the new Flames players look.
