Theres already a line-up at the Apple Store in Chinook Mall, unreal to me
Glad to hear the iPad 2 runs well with the upgrade, ill be upgrading our 2 iPads tonight. My iPod Touch 5 is at home upgraded, looking forward to checking iOS 8 out later tonight
I will never understand this. It's not a once in a lifetime concert. It's a piece of electronics that will be available tomorrow. Or... to pre-order.
I know it's morbid, but I'm eagerly awaiting the hilarious annual videos of apple fanboys/girls camping outside the shop the evening before.
Hey, whatever floats your boat. Not judging.

I've never lined up overnight, but I have shown up a few hours early with a chair to sit in line. I dunno, it's kinda fun. You meet some (often funny or weird) people get to build up a bit of anticipation, get exited as they unlock the store and start getting things ready, get upset when they do things wrong or things don't work... A little microcosm of drama for a few hours.
Maybe I need to get out more lol.

I know this is a stupid question, but I can't seem to find an answer...
Is the Apple store the only place you can buy an iPhone outright? Or will a place like BestBuy or Future Shop also have them available without signing a contract?

When the 4s came out I drove by the Future Shop in Deerfoot Meadows 30 minutes before they opened and there were three or four guys waiting in line. I got behind them and got a phone right when they opened the doors. It took something like two hours to get it activated though because the system was overwhelmed.
I ordered a 6 plus online from Apple and should get it in about a month. I'm good with that.
EDIT: Hm, that one isn't available in Canada on iOS, and the Android one isn't compatible with any of my devices (uh, Nexus 4???), and doesn't have much.
Seems like an app that could be extremely popular. There was another one specifically for iPhone line-ups but Apple isn't approving it.
Ha ha ha what a crappy feeling. I will say Apple should change their box style for these larger phones and ipads as while that may be easy to open on an ipod or iphone 4 it's too clumsy on the bigger hardware as you pull up on the cover and it's so tight it almost creates a vacuum inside sucking the phone out lol.

They just showed the lineup on the news- and made a point of showing the separate "line" for reservations; with 5 people lines up who made an 8:00 reservation.

Weird - I could never get the reservation page on Apple's website to work...
It's not that I don't understand those who line up for this type of thing, I'm just amazed that Apple can pull this off year after year. The basic iPhone experience hasn't changed a lot since the 3G really. Yet people are still willing to lay down cash/time year after year for the latest & greatest.
That's another reason why non-Apple fans end up following these launches, because it's kind of hard not to with all the media attention. It's also what ends up spurring a lot of the anti-Apple talk IMO, since you have reporters talking about people lining up for the "Latest and greatest new phone" while many Android owners feel they already have a device that's better

Even though I am getting a new iPhone today, I will agree that in many ways the Galaxy S5 is a better device. However one of the major turn offs is that it isn't easy for me to just buy a factory unlocked S5. I can't just walk into a store, plop down $800 and walk out with a phone.

There was a link going around twitter that worked for me, but they didn't have the sku I wanted. It came down to whether I was prepared to pay an extra $100 for the 128 gig version. Seemed like overkill. The impatient child in my soul is still pissed at me for not doing it.
edit: iOS8 seems to be working just fine on my 4S. I notice a little sluggish here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary to be honest. My 4S has done incredibly well holding up in comparison to other iPhones I've had. The fact that it's usable in year 3 is not something I could say for the 3G or the 3GS.
Was talking to a Fido store and they were saying none of the stores have stock yet. The one I talked to said they usually get stock by ups the night before but they don't have anything now even though they opened at 8.
That would be bad if they had zero to sell at launch.
