Can we just have a "gaudreau cam" on this kid at all times during training camp?
ala "ovechkin cam" that washington used to do. That is all I ask for this month.

Sure is "kind" of a D move, but maybe jog the memory a tad and go take a wonderful Journey through the Gaudreau thread in the Backburner forum. Some "I told you so" is certainly warranted.

People calling out those who thought they were fortune tellers purely based on the size of a guy they had never heard of or seen before.
It's a caution to everyone. Unless you actively follow the specific teams these kids play on, no one knows these players better than the scouts that have been tracking them. And the annual freakouts that happen when picks are made that are "off the board" or if a poster had a different player in mind, are asinine.
But I guess if everyone just watched who we drafted and took a wait and see approach (as they should) before shooting their mouths off, this place wouldn't be as fun on draft day, or in general.

Should we comb through old threads for posts predicting great things from Flames prospects who became busts in order to play the same "I told you so" game?

Cause I'm sure if he had been a total bomb of a pick, the other side would not also be saying I told you so.

Another draft day comment. This guy was pretty dead on with the weight prediction. He's 160 now. Although I'd say he maxes out at 170 when all is said and done, which is just right. With his playing style, too much weight might be a bad thing.

Sure, there's been some pretty arrogant posts on both sides of the predicting game. But that Gaudreau thread was as as bad as the Jankowski thread is. Likely my two least favorite threads concerning the whole "who knows best" debate.
More to the point though, that Gaudreau thread was especially terrible in the detractors side of things, trying to ague temperance and patience was even a war. Really was a bad time.
So I can certainly understand why some of the posters who were holding fast to the positivity that Gaudreau himself was creating via his play would lob a couple of I told you so's out there. Because like Teeks said, the "bust" crowd would have no problem bringing it up and rubbing it in. Sometimes the high road isn't the best road.

For a fourth rounder? Probably not.

Scouts had him as a 5th or 6th rounder...
All opinions are equally valid, including folks who wanted to trade him
No one is untradable - and I never recall anyone saying give him away for less than he was worth, an example would be the Seguin trade rumours and packaging Johnny and Sven to Boston in order to obtain Seguin.

Really? I can't recall any thread necromancy on this site for the purpose of saying "I told you so" to all the people who made giddily optimistic projections about Dustin Boyd, or Leland Irving, or Matt Pelech, or Greg Nemisz, etc. etc. Not a single one.

Things like "Waste of a pick" and "Should have just traded the pick" was giving him away for less than he was worth. And shows a lack of understanding of the process of a draft.
People are entitled to their opinions of course. But if your opinion is something of an absolute, be prepared to be ridiculed if/when you're tasting you're foot.
EDIT: A good example is Chris Lindberg's stance on Backlund that he was not and never would be an NHL player. A statement he stood by for multiple years and it became more ridiculous as time went on and Backlund progressed. The harder you dig in about an opinion on something that is completely unpredictable, the more backlash there will be when you are shown to be wrong and. It's a lesson in humilty for some people. And it does seem to be the same people who make absolute predicitions about players either way.

As long as the person bringing it up with the benefit of years of hindsight to ridicule someone is prepared to accept the fact that they're kind of a dbag.

The more I think about it, it would probably be best for Johnny to play in the AHL first so he can get used to playing an almost doubled schedule than what he was used to playing in college. But, then you have to take in consideration what he did in the WC, where you played every other day. And on top of that, he was playing against NHLers in the WC. Imo, he has better chemistry with established NHLers than the recent rookie tournament.
I'll be stoked if he makes it to the NHL this year, but won't be angry if he doesn't.

It's not a "See! I was right! HAHA!" it's "See, it's dumb to make absolute predicitons on prospects at 17-18 years old. Whether their in the 1st or 7th round." You can't predict it and pretending you can (and then subsequently denying facts to the contrary) is dooshbaggery at it's finest.
It's the audacity of prediciting the future vs the benefit of hindsight. And people that were predicting JG to be a dynamo may still be wrong. It's the people who just wait and see that are fully within reason to point out why we shouldn't form premature convictions.

Look, if you want to convince yourself it's anything more than acting superior then fine, but you're probably not fooling anyone else.
It seriously adds nothing.

And saying "Waste of a pick" 10 seconds after the kid was taken does?
I haven't insulted anyone outside of saying "Reggie had some gems" earlier in the thread.
Point is, if you want to avoid criticism, don't give an opinion. If you want to give an opinion that's great, it's what the board is for. But that doesn't mean people can't/won't challenge it. And it certainly doesn't exclude it from being dumb or at the very least, premature.

I think you're vastly underestimating how petty some people on here can be. Look at that guy that suggested Backlund was going to bust and has now spent years hoping and praying for it to happen just so he can save face about his initial comments. People are petty.
Also, I am fairly certain Reggie D was one of the many posters who used to come into Jets threads emphatically stating with certainty that Winnipeg would never get an NHL team back. As was mentioned, people can say whatever they want, but when you do it with a smug tone speaking in absolutes, prepare to have it pointed out if you're wrong.

An outstanding viewpoint for a message board.

Did you read the very next sentence?
Opinions are great and are the reason for the board. But stating something as your opinion doesn't remove any risk of criticism. And if you don't change your opinion when presented with evidence to the contrary, it's just not a logical response. And the backlash received will increase exponentially if you present your opinion as fact.
