Anybody else finding the download going really slow. Have Shaw 50 mbps and its telling me there's 9 hours remaining. Bouncing from 11 to 4 to 9 hours. Other than CP, the download is the only other thing going on right now as nobody else is in the office.

I have the same issue. I have been downloading for two and a half hours and it is not even 33% done.

I'm going to guess the download server/system is being overloaded with download requests. I just attempted to download and got a "Request received, we will notify you when you can download" message.

I think nearly a third of all iOS devices were on ios7 within 24 hours of release. And 2/3 after a week I think.
Lots of people hitting the servers for sure.

To the complainers on why Android or Windows people will compare with Apple - because we're tech enthusiasts, stupid! It's like comparing performance cars.

If it was megapixels for the sake of having the highest number, sure. It isn't. See: http://i.nokia.com/blob/view/-/84956.../Download1.pdf
It's called pixel oversampling, and any high megapixel - 20 or 41 MP - PureView Nokia (808, 1020, Icon, 930, 1520) will do it. The iPhone 6+ might have a great camera, but "beat them silly" it has not.

Comparing Apple to Android or Windows to Apple is never a problem, stupid!
It's the people who need to knock Apple down a peg, who need to roll into an Apple conversation JUST to talk about an Android phone.
We all know those people. They aren't called tech enthusiasts. It's the need to say "Oh you like that? Well this thing that I like is like yours, but subjectively better, just so you're aware."
Neato.
Tech fanboys, man, they're weird. The fanboys of the dominant companies are annoyingly proud but seem to keep to themselves (because they're on top, so who cares what anyone else is doing?). The fanboys of the less significant companies always squawk about like they've got to prove something. Perhaps even some weird duty to anyone who explicitly likes Apple to "inform" them of why they're wrong.
Some of the comments in the OnePlus thread are pretty passionately positive. Would seem strange to roll in there and talk about the why it isn't as good as the iPhone. Sometimes it's nice to just let people collectively enjoy something that isn't harming a single soul (anymore than any other similar product).
You see it with everything though, as pointed out, it's just one of those "the world could be better without" kind of things.

i'm not finding any of the custom keyboards that are supposed to be available in the App Store. Perhaps Apple has to approve them yet.
EDIT: Swype just now appeared in the app store

Being able to use Touch ID to unlock 1Password is awesome. I have a very long password so this saves me tons of time. Can't wait until apps like Chrome and Safari can call on 1Password for login info.

Well it's not too hard to talk about Android phones in this thread since the iPhone 6/6+ and lots of the core iOS 8 features are inspired by Android (larger screen, 3rd party keyboards, notification 'widgets', actionable notifications, ...)
Do you think that Apple would have implemented those if Android hadn't?
The unbiased position in this case would be to look at both platforms fairly and realize that both platforms inspire each other and copy/implement each other's features regularly.

Exactly why I'm so excited for Android L. Looks more like the iOS flat design.

Interesting article about the lockdown on data with iOS 8.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09...-to-cops-moot/
Quote:
Apple has updated its privacy policy as part of the rollout of iOS 8, announcing that devices with the latest version of the operating system installed can no longer be accessed by the company itself.
Previously, as we reported in May 2014, if law enforcement came to Apple with a seized device and a valid warrant, it was able to access a substantial portion of the data already on an iPad or iPhone. But under the latest version of iOS, even that will be impossible.

So I'm due for a hardware upgrade and went shopping last night for a new Android phone. Unfortunately, none of the handsets really grabbed me and now that Apple is making big-boy phones I thought I might switch back (have had a 3, 3GS and 4).
When I left Apple for Android a couple years ago, it was because I was tired of iOS and how small the phones were. So the problem with puny phones has been fixed and I just have a couple of questions about iOS that hopefully somebody can answer: - Is Google Maps available in the App Store? I find the native maps app on my wife's iPhone 5S to be absolutely terrible compared to Google Maps on my Galaxy SIII. I have to use maps all the time for my work and I know the Apple maps program can't find half the stuff I need in new residential and industrial areas.
- I think I read somewhere that iOS8 will have some form of widgets. What does that mean in Apple talk? For example, when I look at the weather app icon, will it give me the current temperature, or do I still have to open the app to see the temp?
- Where can I find the new Apple charger cables for a reasonable price? I'll probably need a few for my car, work truck, bedside table, etc.
Has anybody made the jump from Android back to Apple? Everybody I know that went to Apple from Android over the past few years has always been happier with Android, but now Apple has clearly taken steps to become a bit more like the hardware available with Android devices. I know I'm going to miss my widgets, the back button (blows me away Apple doesn't have this) and Google Maps. I'm hoping Apple has made some headway with their widgets and if I can get Google Maps, that would be great. It's also nice Apple has joined this decade by allowing third-party keyboards as giving that up alone would be a deal breaker for me.
I'd look forward to Apple's very good support and the fingerprint button seems awesome to me. I also have three Apple TVs, two car stereos that have Apple controls integrated into them, an iPad and a MacBook Pro so it'd be neat to have my phone part of that ecosystem again. I also like iMessage way better than any Android messaging app I've ever used.
If I don't get the iPhone I'd probably get the Galaxy S5, but the fingerprint button doesn't sound like it's as good as Apple's.

Yes Google Maps is available and works fine. I don't think the icons update for the temperature kind of thing, though there's probably a weather app that puts the temperature with the notification number (i.e. if you have 8 unread emails it's got the 8 in a red circle, a weather app could do something similar).
No idea about cables.

Anyone have any secret places to go for a good chance to pick an iPhone up tomorrow? Looks like my wife is stopping being an enabler and won't go into work later so I can go line up.
I'm on Fido. I did a pre-order but am still 490th in line with open status, even people 300 in line are still open status which probably means they didn't get that many phones to fill through pre-orders.
I've never gone to the 3rd party stores like Wireless Wave, there's one in Pacific Mall. Or London Drugs is often a place people don't think of.

Mono price has iphone cables for cheap that are decent quality - I presume they will develop them for iPhone 6 as well.
As for widgets I would guess we will see some sort of shift towards live updating apps (for weather, etc) similar to android but I've heard they will only be accessible in a specific screen. I have to play around in ios8 a bit more to figure it out.
