I have loads of these at my house as I live near the river valley in Edmonton. Really ugly buggers but they do their job on the bugs. First time I saw one I hit the internet as well looking to see what kind it was

But in all honesty, talking spiders, I wish they where all that small... But nope I choose to live in the place where they are bigger then my face. Oh and let alone the warning in the newspaper today to make sure your home is snake proof do to snakes getting in houses. Two eastern browns in kitchens this week...

I relocate them if I can, but when you have a screaming significant other or family member... my hands are a little tied.

 , that is alarming! Btw, I would pay you a substantial amount of money for a male and female Sydney Funnel Web spider. 
Edit: Don't take that last part seriously, I do want them but they are illegal to export.

Yeah even though my front deck/entrance looks like a Halloween display if I go out after dusk due to all the spiders I leave them so they can eat the other bugs.
When I see them I just console myself that winter is coming.
We have two seasons, spiders and no spiders.

By far the biggest spider I had ever seen; about 4" across.
(not my pic, but very similar and shows size)

Found a spider very similar to that under our sink a couple weeks ago. It was living in the container with the detergent tablets. Biggest spider I've ever seen indoors.

Bah, in the past year or so, Ive probably seen about 3 of these in my basement. Certainly, quite large compared to other indoor spiders I've seen.
What breed are they?
