I honestly can't believe a Canadian police officer would come in and say that. That's a very poor opinion to hold in his postion, imo. I know that sounds a little harsh, and it's just a message board, but I don't want to think our police officers have that attitude.

Its a poor opinion but very common among police in Calgary (Canada wide I suspect).

A lot of them don't know the Charter and don't know the rights that all Canadian have.

Police officers have very difficult jobs but a little more training would go a long way.

Drivers licence check? Legal drinking age? Maybe you match the description of someone we are trying to locate and we want to confirm that person is not you? Shall I go on?

Police officers don't just randomly ask people for their I.D., at least not where I police. If an officer asks you for I.D. he probably has a reason. If you don't want to show it you probably have something to hide.

Really? Because I asked why you would not want to cooperate with an officer you think that is a poor opinion? You are making it sound like I believe officers should just randomly harrass the public for I.D. checks which is not what I said at all. I asked why you would not give an officer your I.D. because he probably has a damn good reason for wanting it. Love how people try and twist what other posters write.

They were likely doing something wrong if you're asking them about a situation like that.

Or they look possibly underage? We do walkthroughs in licenced establishments. If you are driving a motor vehicle I have every right to see your licence. Maybe you fit the descripion of a missing person. There can be many reasons but just randomly stopping people and asking for I.D. is laughable, I don't know any police officer that does that, we have better things to do. What I was asking is what reason besides your Charter Rights would you have not to give an officer your I.D.? Because you can?

If you are doing walkthroughs then sure, I was more referring to drinking in public situations.

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem giving a cop my ID in most situation, cant speak for others though.

EDIT - Decided to change any to most

Holy crap that's disappointing to read. From a (apparently) police officer.

Ok, give me a good reason why you wouldn't? Go ahead. Yes, I chose the glorious career to portray on CP as a police officer rather than the 6 figure jobs the other 95% of you have. Lmao.

Like I said, id very likely show it, however if I was walking down the street and an officer randomly walked up to me and asked to see my ID, id at the very least question why.

I hope so, he should have told you why to start with. If he doesn't he shouldn't be asking.

This discussion was a result of a black actress refusing to show her id after being mistaken for a prostitute because she kissed her white husband. No one cares about being ID'D for consuming alcohol or driving a vehicle, for the vast most part. That's a big difference than being asked for ID because you're black woman kissing a white man. Why should she have to show ID for kissing her husband? This isn't 1950 and she shouldn't be harassed for having a white husband.

Ah, see, this is what I get for posting before reading back to see how this all started. I just skimmed that story but if what she states is true then those officers should be dismissed. Unfortunately in the U.S. that crap goes on all the time. I am not saying there are not bad cops, there are. I just read Arya going off about how he should not ever have to show his I.D. so I was wondering why not.

If the lawyer doesn't convince you, the cop after him should.

My bad, I didn't read back that far. She shouldn't.

I get video does not exist. Look, what I am saying is that policing is a hell of a lot different in Canada than in the U.S., if an officer wants your I.D. he will explain why, or he should. I don't understand why someone would not show their I.D. unless they didn't want that officer to know who they were for some legal reason. You have still not given any other reason why.

I've already stated my opinion.

Here is another opinion though.

Cops are not god.
