They played with much more dominance despite not really adhering to a true 'system' and without a real day of practice. The Oilers should be embarassed that they spent most of the game with the man advantage, got outshot anyway, and win by one goal.
I don't think we had the PK system as described in the Backlund article in place. Gave away zone entry far too readily, and the low forward was far too high - they should've been lining up 3 across the blue line while the high forward skating back cuts down the options along one wing.
Two of those PP goals (the first one where buddy just walks right in while the forward is too far back, and the 2nd on the 5 on 3 where the one timer wasn't covered whatsoever) came from the d-man either not cutting the shooting lane off, or the PK forward not taking away the cross-ice option.
Look at where Byron is perched in this gif. We park someone there, and the cross ice option becomes way harder especially if we're strong along the boards.
Why would either team be embarrassed? people are taking this young star tourney much to serious. Its just a reason to get some rookies feet wet and get some evaluation time in.

Not according to the old boy's club up north. And they still barely won.

Bob Stauffer stated in an interview on Friday afternoon that the Oilers management was "embarrassed" by their showing in last year's tournament, and they were actively determined to ice a better lineup this year. Whatever that means, it sure sounds like the Oilers take this tournament more seriously than merely as an opportunity to evaluate rookies.

If that's actually true then I suppose they are just 1 win away from fulfilling the master plan!
JG is probably 50% of the reason I'm tuning in each game. Let's face it, the overall quality of hockey is in the dumps being a september tournament full of rookies, although yesterday was an improvement from Friday I'll admit. At least bring back Granlund and put him with Bennett.

Look at the Sabre in front of the net. He is wide open and would have all day if the puck makes it to him. That is a terrible way to play the pk.
Hunter Smith is the nephew of an original Calgary Flame, Brad Smith. Many on this site probably don't remember Brad Smith but he was fun to watch. Had a motor that wouldn't quit and scored a beauty of a game winning goal vs the Flyers on HNIC during the Flames first season in Calgary.

Oil Stain is doing what he does best. Displacing his insecurities about his own team by trying to take digs at Calgary. I haven't seen "drooling" over Smith or Kanzig. People are enamored with their size, because having serviceable players with size and grit is part of building a successful team in this day and age. What's ironic is someone who cheers for a team full of smurfs not recognizing that.
The Oilers have always had a bunch of big, poor players throughout the years. MacIntyre, Eager, Strudwick, Gazdic, etc. As an Edmonton fan I'm certainly no stranger to that.
Edmonton fans also get all excited about big prospects that aren't drafted for skill and then project ability onto them.
These guys are a dime a dozen at the NHL level. They receive much more attention then they deserve as prospects IMO.
