I'm 32 and when I was in grade school our principal still gave swats up until I was in 6th grade.

Me too. He had this crazy studded belt in his drawer and every kid in my class was terrified of doing anything wrong.
Just because we went through it, I can't honestly say i'm a better adult for it. I never got "the strap" as we called it. Fear and terror shouldn't be the driving factor for children to not misbehave. Parent's instilling a strong sense of right and wrong, and kids learning real world consequences should do that.
That being said, I have a feeling when my kids are growing up, they might get one or two butt swats to emphasize a lesson.

Of course this is the situation. Usually, you discipline your kids in the same manner you were disciplined. How the hell else would you learn this?

It sounds like from the way AP is cooperating that he believes that their is nothing wrong with how he is discipline his child and the mistake he made was accidentally clipping the testicles.
The scary part of this is that it means that culturally there are a lot of people who share this belief. Hopefully this shows people that this type of behaviour is unacceptable and is abuse not parenting.

I have no problem with spanking with the hand, but you can't use a stick or strap. Especially when dealing with a 4 yr old.

This is a conversation I had with someone yesterday. Where do you draw the line on the use of objects when spanking? Wooden spoons are ok, but switches aren't?? Or all objects are ok as long as they don't pierce or bruise the skin? You can't develop a legal standard for which objects are ok and which arent- so they are either all wrong, or all acceptable.
Even then, I would argue that even the hand is just as capable of damaging and marking the skin.

pretty simple. when ur spanking a kid, leaving marks is probably an easy indicator that you've done wrong.
a light slap is usually enough to punish a child or indicate clear wrong doing. i don't think the message is proportionate to the amount of force used.
i'm sad that he will be back playing as early as this sunday based on reports out today

Fixed your post.
I know this isn't a spanking v no-spanking thread, but spanking is wrong. There is no need, and it is lazy parenting.

fair enough. i'm not even sure about my position on spanking (as i was given a small smack here and there for not listening to my folks when i was small).
my argument is that regardless, the line where spanking has gone too far isn't that hard to draw.

Can we quit calling it a "Switch" and call it what it is, an improvised whip? Cause that is what it is used for to whip a child.
Hate these cutesy nick names for weapons. Just call it what it is.

I guess losing on Sunday changed the Vikings minds on a child abuser.

The "much tougher" NFL domestic violence policy should kick in any minute now... if AP doesn't get 6 games (eventually, even) it will be clear that the NFL's concern over domestic violence and other off-the-field violence goes only as far as ownership's wallet.

I'm pretty sure the decision was made because my fantasy team has been crushed in back-to-back weeks. Even more-so now that he didn't play week 2.
All jokes aside - it was mentioned before I believe, but it's hard to change the way people parent. Chances are AP was disciplined this way as a child also, so he doesn't see it as wrong...whereas the rest of us cannot believe it. Just speculation on my part, but I know I mimic the way my parents parented me in a lot of different situations...none of which include beating my children of course.

I am the opposite, I have not slapped my kids across the face once, I haven't taken a spoon/rubber soled slipper to them once.
While it is "hard to change the way people parent", that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.
Crimes against the extremely vulnerable are particularly abhorrent.

I never said it shouldn't be tried, I'm just saying it is engrained in people. As for your first paragraph - I'm not sure what you're saying? Are you saying you were slapped/spooned as a child but you don't do the same to your children? Otherwise I don't understand what you're saying.

That is exactly what I am saying.
I choose to take a different approach to raising my children.
