Considering I'd be moving across the country for this, I'd love to know!

Obviously all of us look for jobs that combine our passion with our work. However, just because you are a Flames fan doesn't mean you would enjoy working for the Flames. And in fact you may come away from that experience no longer being an employee nor a fan.
By all means pursue your dream - but just think carefully about why you think the Flames would make a great career choice in addition to being a personal interest.

It's a great point, and something I do worry about. Kinda the same idea of 'never meet your heroes', sometimes things don't live up to your expectations.
The other aspect that I'm excited about is having a push to Calgary. On a personal level, I have friends who have made the move and are constantly bothering me to jump over there as well knowing that it's something I have always wanted to do. Having a job with an organization I have always been involved in is a pretty strong incentive to start packing. Professionally, I have been impressed lately with the style they are trending towards. I see a lot that I can bring to further their design language, but I like the page their writing on.

I interviewed with the Flames for a job in their Finance department when I was straight out of university. I remember saying to the interviewer, a younger guy, that I could make a little more money elsewhere through other offers but that I was passionate about the business and in particular the organization and it would be my first choice.
Guy told me... most of us don't even like the Flames, I am a (blank) fan myself, and it's not like we are running around high fiving the players anyway. Great passionate employee he was. Fortunately went into another industry that led me to Kelowna so I'm happy in retrospect but still.

Yeah, you gotta think that they prefer to hire non fans to work in the front office.
Last thing they want to do is hire an uber fan who posts on CPuck who could potentially have inside access to financials, marketing, etc plans.
It also wouldn't surprise me if the pay and hours were lousy, as the allure of working for a pro sports team would allow them to under-pay for similar market positions

Me and my sister are pushing for the same field (she's more physical marketing) and she is looking at the Marketing & Promotions Internship as well. She's, of all things, a Canucks fan. Her friend, a Canadiens fan just started working there as well.
Definitely wouldn't have guessed that I could be working shoulder-to-shoulder with dirty dirty Canucks fans, but in the end it's a job to these people.

Wow, that's kind of ****ty that it appears they use "we're the Calgary Flames" as a reason to not pay to industry standards. I mean, it's business, I get it, but still, kind of bummer and a bit of a slap in the face to those that do work there because it's the Flames.
"How's the dream job with the Flames?"
"The job is great, it's my dream. Although, the pay isn't where it should be because they know how much we want to work for them".

It's supply and demand. This applies to labour just like it does to goods and services. They probably get thousands of applicants for any decent job posting. They probably benchmark their pay grades and HR structure to be competitive in their industry just like any company would.
I know what you mean though that would suck.
I for one wouldn't work for the Flames. I think it's one of those cases of "don't s*** where you eat". Kind of a funny analogy and don't think I used it right but turning hobbies/passions into career can kill the magic.

Having worked for four professional sports orgs the biggest piece of advice I would give you is the biggest mistake people make in coming to organizations like this is you think you will be a part of the team - and they consciously take advantage of this ... You won't. There is a huge divide with the Flames and 98% of pro teams between the BUSINESS side of the organization and the TEAM side.... So while it may seem glamorous on the outside it really isn't... The money is crap - but they get you because you think your part of the team - your not. Sorry not trying to be a jerk, just trying to give an accurate take on it. Basically it comes down to passion - if you are happy with crap pay, very crap hours and being treated like crap (as you are very easily replaceable) go nuts... All that being said there is no better job when your team is winning...

^ That's disgusting pay, even for a graphic designer. Might as well be working at MacD's.. wow..
I'd stick to freelancing over that. I charge 35/hr with projects coming in fairly consistently month to month. Works nicely on the side of school.

Not a jerk at all, very good points I need to HEAVILY consider when pursuing my dream job.
The crap pay and hours... I can understand. But the one thing I didn't consider was the replaceability part.
'There are 75 people outside this door that will do your job tomorrow' gives management way too much power when you have a different design proposal from what they had in mind. Instead of considering my proposal, they could pull in a guy they feel fits their vision. This would be disappointing management, which I hope the Flames do not have, but a possibility none-the-less.

I know a guy that used to work for the Flames in a similar position to what you are looking at. He told me the same thing others on here have already stated. Low pay below industry standards. It was interesting talking to him about the team because he talked with people and players inside the organization on a daily basis.

From what Scorponok had told me a while back, he said he got offered to do up a website or something for the Flames a couple years ago or maybe a decade ago. You should ask him how he got his foot in the door.

My pay with the canucks, part time mind you, it's not so far out of whack with industry standards. Over $40 an hour, way more than any TV station in Calgary is paying in a similar role. Are the Flames really that far out to lunch on this?
It's an interesting job, any job working for a pro sports team.
