Default Rate the hockey leagues

Ok, so I don't really much know anything about other leagues and hoping posters with more knowledge will help me rate leagues in North America.

Just want to get an idea of how players do in other leagues and if their stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. What caught my attention was Dane Fox, who I had never heard about until tonight and he has scored 64 goals in 67 games in the OHL. Is the OHL that bad?

1. NHL
2. ?
3. ?
4. ?
5. ?

Dane Fox was an overager playing in the OHL.

There are players like him that come through the Canadian junior leagues every year. Brendan Shinnimin a few years ago in the WHL comes to mind.

Isn't the CHL the W, O and QM combined?

For me it's

1. NHL

2. AHL
3. NCAA

4. OHL (all CHL leagues are close, but the O has a slightly higher NHLE than the other 2)
5. WHL
6. QMJHL

7. ECHL

The NCAA plays older players than the CHL, which makes it a harder league to play in.

You can use the NHL-E of different leagues to get a sense of the overall talent level of that league.

I'd bet the ECHL wouldn't be too far off from the CHL too.

Another note about NHL-E, it tends to underestimate players who graduate from the league at a young age, and it tends to overestimate players who graduate the league at an older age.

I wouldn't expect Dane Fox to put up 20 goals in the nhl next year. I doubt the guy is talentless though, he could put up some points at a higher level.

It goes something like this:

1.NHL
2.AHL
3.ECHL
4.Central Hockey League
5.NCAA (Div 1.)
5.CIS (Canadian College)
6.OHL
7.WHL
8.QMJHL
9.USHL
10.BCHL

Maybe swap the last two?

ECHL is made up of mostly older players that were PPG in Major Junior and NCAA.

They would fist NCAA and Major Junior teams on a regular basis IMO.

CIS needs to be lower, in my opinion. I played there for two years and would have never have gotten a sniff in any CHL league.

I think there is a pretty wide range between the good teams and the bad, but the WJC teams routinely play and lose against CIS teams in tune up games for the tournament.

What is the purpose of rating the leagues? This is like arguing about who is the greatest British prime minister.....

The CIS is good hockey, You dont have the high end future NHLers, but there is a big difference between a 24 year old CIS player and a 17 year old WHL player.

The CIS is where the CHL players go after their major junior career is over and they look o continue to their hockey career while claim their CHL scholarships. If they wish to continue their "pro" careers after CIS, many end up in the SEL/DEL etc

The majority of CIS players were CHL players at some point.

On this years Golden Bears team, only 2 players did not play CHL...and one player who didnt play CHL but played SEL

There are giant gaps in talent in the CIS teams. Besides the bottom of the barrel level teams, they would beat CHL teams. Even teams that have guys who wouldn't play in the CHL are still better than 16/17 year old ChL players by the time they are 22/23.
